There's a scottish folk song called — and in the collection I found it was even spelled this way — "Ye Cannae Throw Yuir Granny Affa Bus". The book didn't say, but it appears to be to the tune of "She'll Be Comin' 'Round the Mountain."

Oh ye cannae throw yuir Granny affa bus!
No, ye cannae throw yuir Granny affa bus!
No, ye cannae throw yuir Granny - 'cos she's yuir Mammy's Mammy,
Ye cannae throw yuir Granny affa bus!

Ye can throw yuir other Granny affa bus!
Ye can throw yuir other Granny affa bus!
Ye can throw yuir other Granny - 'cos she's yuir Pappy's Mammy,
Ye can throw yuir other Granny affa bus!

But soft! What rock through yonder window breaks? It is a brick! And Juliet is out cold.

Is that in Scots perhaps? It kind of looks like it.

It's in Funetik Aksent Scottish English.

Edit: I hate that trope name. I misspell it every single time.

Ah.

...it's reminding me of the remake of Dragon Quest 4 where everyone has some sort of accent. The first town is filled with people who say "cannae" and "bairn" a lot. I like that word for kid...BAIRN. Seriously. Scots and Scottish English I assuming have the best word for kid ever. BAIRN.

Kidin's pretty cool too, but something is just so charming about bairn.

I want to learn one of those languages (well all of the Gaelic languages really...) but I'm not sure how to go about it...I don't know anyone who knows any of them and there are no classes for it anywhere near me. SADNESS.

Love Flogging Molly. Also have some albums by the Dubliners; good stuff.

I didn't write any of that.

I like Flogging Molly, but I don't care too much for their lead vocalist. I've only recently begun to listen to The Dubliners stuff extensively. Altan, The Pogues, and Shane Mac Gowan and the Popes are great loves of mine. Especially that last one. I grew up on it!

Hmmm... one moment while I hunt something down.

Thumpermonkey Lives! did a pretty damned good "Tam Lin." It doesn't use the lyrics I prefer — it's a slightly more updated version — but it's fun.

Back in marching band, we would do our warmups in time with random music on random people's Ipods.

Flogging Molly came up suspiciously often >.>

Really? I didn't know many people who liked them when I was in school. I knew a few who loved them and who also really liked Mac Gowan and The Pogues.

Related: Our band teacher at my old school had a theme to the songs every year. This past year, I convinced him to do Celtic music. It. Was. Amazing.

The Pogues are classic and amazing, both for their traditional stuff and their originals.

For Irish traditional music I tend to stick with the more well-known, classic bands like the Cheiftains and the Dubliners. They're amazing, but I'd like to learn about some of the more obscure stuff. It's a genre of music I love but have yet to really study.

Oooh. I've only heard a bit by the Chieftains, but I certainly liked what I've heard. Any recommendations you could give me in regards to them?

If you want straight-up, mostly instrumental traditional folk music, get one of their numbered albums from the '60s and '70s; they're all really good, but the quality noticeably picks up at The Chieftains 4, when Derek Bell joins the band. If you want more fusion-y stuff, with rock, country, and global folk influences and frequent celebrity vocals, get one of the post-1985 albums (honestly, there are too many for me to keep straight).

Ooh, I love the Chieftains and Flogging Molly.

If you're into fusion music, nothing can top Afro Celt Sound System.

I hadn't even considered them. I have Seed and that's a great album.

Also have The Long Black Train by the Chieftains, and I think I would like it a lot better without the guest vocals.

I didn't write any of that.

Oooh. I like that thing you embedded there. I've only heard a bit of fusiony Celtic music like that, but I like what I've heard. The rest of the fusion I've heard is mostly rock or metal.

Not my favorite thing Altan's did, but it is the first I heard of them. Found it on some CD of Celtic music.

This was on that same CD. I rather like that CD since it had a bunch of different artists on it so I could hunt down some names...

MacGowan and Nancy Whiskey. It and Aisling are songs near and dear to me because they were often played when I was a child.
