Generally, I phrase my questions as "Is it X" with the explanation of what a non-X answer would be. The mathmatician's answer would be a yes/no, but to the first phrase. The problem is that when people answer with a pothole to Mathmatician's answer, they think they're being clever, when it's actually a deliberate misunderstanding of the question! For shaaaaaame.
