There didn't appear to be a thread for S.T.A.L.K.E.R. as a series (even though it's technically one game and two expandalones...), so I figured I'd go ahead and start one up.

So let's discuss the very atmospheric series of wide open shooters set in a post Chernobyl Ukraine, shall we? Any favorite parts of the game, favorite mods, and such?

I just picked Chernobyl and Pripyat off of Steam. Despite the many, many ways the first game pissed me off, I'm finding I missed it.

Make the game much more refined, less buggy, and they restore cut or non-functional content. There's also mods to add superfluous, but really neat and useful stuff, such as vehicles and player-homes with storage units that have a static inventory.

I love the first STALKER game. It's quite similar to Fallout 3 in many ways, and far better, IMO, although not an RPG. The bugs were a concern - I picked it up right after release, when there were still many bugs that would break quests and cause problems. Thankfully they've been ironed out by the official patches and fan mods.

Clear Sky was disappointing in many ways and I haven't played much of Call of Pripyat, but it doesn't seem much better.

I wish they'd hurry up and release the new version of Supermod...

Only get Supermod if you like weird stuff. The weapons are imbalanced, though.

I'm impressed by the new shaders in the complete So C mod. It makes the game a ton darker but it's already a half-horror shooter in the first place, it might be harder to see and fight but the atmosphere makes up for it.

[up][up][up][up][up] They summarise on the pages on MODDB. Shadow of Chernobyl is here, Pripyat is here.

Best mod I've ever played is quite possibly AMK. It's great in its simplicity. I however don't ahve a slightest idea as to how well does it work with the non-Russian versions.

It is an RPG in that you can roleplay whatever.

Btw guys.

Here's the coolest thing I've found while in Chernobyl.

You know the brain scorcher, right? guess what!

It's real. I'm dead serious about it. Except... it's actually noticeably bigger in real life. And I've totally seen it myself.

It is called Chernobyl-2, and even though it is not functional now and is barely holding up (it had been abandoned after the explosion) it's still there. Basically it is a huge radar wall (and by that I mean it's 150/90 x 900 metres). It hadn't been used much because when this thing is on active search the resulting em field is so powerful it's a worldwide technobane.

the most impressive thing about it is that it is actually holding up, even after those years and all the metal scavengers it's not gonna fall any time soon, even though it's so thin it's comparable to a paper sheet's relative thinness. This is some impressive construction.

I guess it's soon going to become a huge wind farm.

I'm curious, how have you seen it yourself? I thought the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone was closed off.

Also: holy shit that thing is enormous

Obviously I wasn't anywhere near it. Duh!

12x binoculars.

There are stalkers IRL, by the way. So "closed off" is a vague description.

People live there, you know... interestingly Geiger counter says - obviously, not the Chernobyl reactor itself, but the adjacent land - it's pretty safe there, imagine a village with radiation level of a city and you get my point.

Apples are huge there. Fuckhuge. I could barely fit one in my hand - that huge.

The last one is bloody enormous! Why on Earth did they feel the need to make something so big? How did they make something so big? Why is that not in the game? Did Monolith tear it down?

Hey, maybe they did.

> Why on Earth did they feel the need to make something so big?

Because that's the Soviet Wi-Fi and they wanted to play тетяис in co-op mode.

seriously though, again, it's a radar. not just your ordinary kind of radar.

Do you know its coverage zone? Earth. I mean,    the whole Earth   . It can detect anything, anywhere.

Maintenance on that thing would have sucked. And don't even think about how much power it would have required.

Also, people will occasionally be let into the Zone (with a guide, of course) for tourism purposes, I heard, but the commission or organization or whatever in charge of the Zone is a little strict, I think.

Also, there are apparently forms of wildlife surviving in the Zone.

Well, I don't know, but I think there had been some sort of a nuclear reactor somewhere there. Maybe. Possibly.

> Also, there are apparently forms of wildlife surviving in the Zone.

Well duh! It was a boiler explosion, not a nuclear explosion.

^^Yeah, the reactor would make sense, but that still looks like quite a bit to power.

Also, from what I recall, among the wildlife is some sort of quadruped and a species of bird. The whole wildlife thing was part of a debate as to whether or not the Zone was safe for life or something like that.

My personal theory about the whole Chernobyl thing is that the radar wall fried some sort of electronics there.

but I'll probably never have enough clearance.

on the other hand, my friend went to the Security Service pretty much to get enough clearance about those matters.

did you know Tesla was building war stuff for the Red Army? Because there are schematics.
