Hmm... After seeing the concept I'm more sure than ever that this movie is going to have at least some parallels to Swan Lake. I'm almost entirely sure the sequence where Madoka is dancing is directly taken from that play.

As there's a shot of a destroyed Mitihara City that resembles a post WN city, I wonder if Gretchen will be an unintended consequence of Homura's actions. Perhaps you cannot seperate all that is pure and good in someone without leaving behind the persons darker impulses.

I do wonder how Hitomi's gonna fit into all of this. And what that huge tower is leading to. And what's Mami's deal, etc.

Translations, reportedly. I make no guarantees about their accuracy, since their provenance is "I copied them from a post that said they were copied from reddit."

Madoka and Homura: I wonder what ‘happiness’ is.

Madoka: It is the bright sunbeams of May.

Homura: It is a warm family.

Madoka: It is sunny-side up eggs for breakfast.

Madoka and Homura: But Heaven has none of those things.

Madoka and Homura: I wonder what ‘happiness’ is.

Homura: It is having your name called by someone.

Madoka: It is calling someone’s name.

Homura: It is someone thinking about you.

Madoka and Homura: The Goddess had none of those things.

Homura: A lizard-girl could not help but take pity on the Goddess.

Madoka: And still thinking that, the lizard-girl split the Goddess into two equal halves, and kidnapped one of those halves, taking her from Heaven to the surface of the earth.

Homura: And until that cruelty, that gentle radiance, when it was met in the darkness…was too dazzling.

A: Lately there’s been a lot of cats around, huh?

B: They’re mixed in with dead cats.

A: How can you tell they’re dead?

Kyoko: I can’t allow this. That person would definitely would turn to someone else in situations like this with unexplained causes. [not sure on this]

Sayaka: That’s impossible, isn’t it? How can this be? Why can I read these characters?

Hitomi: I’m they’ve been forbidden to talk about it. If the benefits of magic aren’t kept a secret, perhaps its effects will disappear.

Nagisa: For some reason this smells [suspiciously] like a conspiracy.

Kyubey: Why am I [here?]?…isn’t there no benefit to this whatsoever?

Mami: You too keep secrets from yourself and from whoever you’re with, don’t you? [unsure on this one too]

Homura: Are you saying you intend to get in my way?

Also, Madoka repeats "You don't have to hate anyone, or fight anyone, or..." and trails off, and asked if "all of you, are you fairies too? Will you save me?" at the very end.

Tl;dr, being a goddess means going without the simple pleasures of existence, probable Schrödinger's cat reference, and secret shenanigans.

I'm surprised Kyubey's still somewhat alive, that's one tough bugger.

Also, from the sounds of things, Homura's Lotus-Eater Machine is starting to break down.

I don't think Homura intended to kill Kyubey.

Just torture him forever.

Madoka and Homura: I wonder what ‘happiness’ is.

Madoka: It is the bright sunbeams of May.

Homura: It is a warm family.

Madoka: It is sunny-side up eggs for breakfast.

Madoka and Homura: But Heaven has none of those things.

...Huh.

Hetumi knows about magic now?

You know, Hitomi gets a lot of attention for a minor character, but I kind of want to see Kyousuke make a contract or something. He certainly has enough angst, and it'd throw Seyiku for a loop...

[up][up]

The passage basically describes Madoka's life before she became a magical girl and eventually a goddess. Remember that scene in the first episode(?) of the anime where Madoka was eating breakfast with her family?

Maybe Madoka was making other magical girls happy, at the cost of being eternally doomed to not experience happiness herself.

No, I know.

It's similar to some analysis things I've read and linked to earlier.

Also, from the sounds of things, Homura's Lotus-Eater Machine is starting to break down.

Makes sense. Homura created her new status quo with an emphasis on making things great for her social group without much care to how it affects the overarching setting. "Everybody's happy forever and nothing bad happens," isn't sustainable in the long-term.

Madoka's new status quo was a minor tweak to make things less shitty but still leave the key elements intact, while Homura basically took a knife to the entire system to carve out as much short-term benefit as possible. That was never going to last.

Which is weird, since Madoka wants to help others, since it gives her a sense of purpose and ultimately, she just wants to help others.

So is the passage Homura's opinion of Madoka's wish?

I don't think there's any contradiction between finding fulfillment in helping people as a concept and missing the joys from when you were a human.

Not optimistic about this. The universe is pretty ripe for exploring different stories than Madoka/Homura, but we seem to be playing around with the same set of characters (including Fucking Nagisa). It makes sense from a financial standpoint, but it's a shame anything fresh is relegated to manga spin-offs.

Also, I'm pretty sure Urobuchi wasn't listed on staff for this, but at the same time, wasn't it implied that a lot of the material came from talks between the Magica Quartet?

It's more that I stopped caring about it since Rebellion (and so has Urobuchi). When first it came out, I really wanted a resolution, but I've increasingly come to regard Rebellion as an unnecessary add-on to the series, so I'm not particularly interested in exploring its story threads.

I'm fine with sticking with these characters, I would just like to pass the narrative focus around a bit.

The first Work was about Madoka. The second was about Homura. It's Sayaka, Kyoko, or Mami's turn to hold the Protagonist Stick.

I think so too. The confrontation she and Homura had at the end of Rebellion feels like it's setting her up to be the main character of the next Madoka work.

She still might not be, but I think that would be a good direction to go in.

Or hell, do Different Story. Then you can give Mami and Kyoko one focus story and leave the Rebellion sequel to Sayaka.

I wonder how could a proper sequel to Rebellion be made.

For one, since Homura erased or tempered with the memories of all the magical girls, there ought to be an external catalyst that made Madoka regain her power and given that Rebellion borrows some elements of Paradise Lost, all that is left is for a Saint Michael equivalent to finish the story.

Who could that be is up in the air; my (Wild Mass) guess is that it could be someone from the future that Homura has inevitably created, perhaps Tatsuya since he was the only other person who remembered Madoka after her ascension.

Instead of focusing on relatives that divide us, we should find the absolutes that tie us.
