<_< Why the heck you focus on the "She might as well crawl" when I make the point of "Turning into BOMB dropping ball" :P And how the hell crawling would help you escape from metroids when they have latched onto your head?

The method how Samus escapes from metroid is "Turn into morph ball(at this point Metroid is still latched onto her), drop a bomb. Bomb explodes and the metroid loses grip on her"

...Or am I confusing it with Prime? Was Samus just able to shoot ice beam in 2d games to get rid of them?

All of the Hunters hunters had something approximating a morph ball as well; but that's still not exactly standard issue equipment anywhere in the galaxy.

[up][up]Metroids are really fast = "...Oh well..."

I forgot...was not able to put "2" and "2" together to get "Metroid latch = Morph ball = drop bomb = Free from latch"

YO. Rules of the Internet 45. Rule 45 is a lie.

I pointed Metroids being really fast because it kinda hard to avoid getting attacked by them, so soldiers without way to free themselves can't just avoid getting latched in first place. I guess they could work in squads and attack metroids that latch on each other, but metroids usually come in groups as well...

Should they have a game where a Metroid outbreak grows so bad that it's when the GF orders their extinction, then I'd want to see the evolved forms from Return of Samus. It'd be quite a battle against an Omega Metroid.

No, morphball+bomb is the only way to be rid of them in the 2D games too. Which limits the number of people able to escape to, Samus, Sylux and Kanden...and Sylux would probably take too long, given the way the tribombs work (and Kanden's would not work at all in the original Metroid when it took several bombs to force their mandibles, luckily for him they were nerfed in Zero Mission)

And, actually I think Metroids destroying a civilization before our eyes would be pretty neat. Personally, I thought Prime did a good job of showing why the Federation might want Metroids gone (they ended up all over the place during the phazon crisis, that might have taken a long time to sort out) but you're right about them often feeling like the lesser threat whenever there was another threat anywhere else in the general vicinity (except the Prime trilogy, but even then that was really just one Metroid rather than them in general). It would be awesome to wander through the remains of their victims on a scale beyond even Elysia and the Valhalla, shells of people everywhere, disintegrating with every touch, shrieking eyeless swarms passing over head, new metamorphoses thanks to a new planet for new boss battles, panicked log book entries along with admiration of your work, even if it is ultimately too late.

And just to give the player a sense of accomplishment, we could have Samus manage to protect a bunch of evacuees, so even if that particular world is falling, some of its people have survived.

Though, for real, they're probably just spiky scales he can rapidly regrow. Like that myth about porcupines shooting quills, except not.

I sure said that!

It takes place between Metroid Prime 3 and Metroid 2: Return of Samus, not between Corruption and Echoes. Sure, Metroids are dangerous, but we never see much of a reason why they all have to die when they could be focusing on finishing off the Space Pirates.

Scripted or depending on performance?

Very good question! Maybe Samus always manages to save some of them, but there's an element of performance to how many of the ships get to take off and how they fare in their new home as a result?

Maybe some of the extra exploration involves finding trapped/hidden members and Samus directing them to the evacuation ship.

So, getting a low time and high collection rate would reward you with more survivors?

I'll be honest, I'd prefer that.

I have a message from another time...

One of the situations I imagined was that Samus is actually a blinding beacon to the Metroids, a delicious source of energy, so she has initially agreed to avoid seeking out the survivor enclaves and instead serve as a distraction. However, when a group of survivors makes their move to try and escape, you can rush over to help them. These planet-breaks happen at pre-determined times so that the player isn't too indisposed, but still results in a cross-country race, not unlike the bit with Ghor in Corruption.

I like the idea of Samus rescuing survivors. It would be good to see her saving people in addition to blowing up pirates, planets, and parasites. Like how you want to see superheroes rescue people from fires sometimes and not just punch supervillians in the face.

FYI, something of this nature is part of the Super Metroid hack "Eris".

If a Metroid latches onto a civilian, though, how is Samus supposed to save them? Bombing the Metroid off might kill the victim too. Perhaps she's freeze the Metroid then try to grapple it off?

I loved that mad dash across Sky Town when Ghor starts attacking your ship in Prime 3. It was very tense and the constant updates from my ship's VI left me going "Fuckfuckfuckfuckfuckfuckfuck I'm gonna beat the curse out of that bastard!"

Let the joy of love give you an answer! Check out my book!

Also the Welding Beam. Fuck me the Welding Beam was so adorable.

@Tuckerscreator: Four possibilities.

1) The civilians have exosuits of some kind and we can just handwave the bombs as not hurting them for the same reason they don't hurt Fed Marines and other friendly targets.

2) Once a Metroid grabs someone, it's too late.

3) What you said.

4) Samus is mostly called upon to protect ships and fortifications, not individuals running around.

I could see a situation where an escape vessel is being boarded by civilians from one direction while a wave of Pirates/Metroids approaches from one-to-three other angles, with Samus' mission being that nary the two shall meet.

I sure said that!

Oh, I like that. It would be almost Tower Defense-ish, but it would end up only being a small part of the game.

I'm not sure dialogue really fits into a Metroid game but I'd love a scene like in Iji where Iji is let into the Tasen bunker. Just a last pocket of survivors and they're all so fatalistic. At some point in the game Samus has to or can just decide to go into the bunker and meet the survivors. Show how Samus represents hope or something. I just really liked the bunker scene.
