Last semester, I took a judo class and got wiped out during the friggin' warm-ups. I also hit my head a couple of times trying to learn how to fall. On the upside, I got a few compliments while sparring concerning my ability to get out of holds. I would've gone back, but college caught up with me and I don't think it's taught anymore. About a month later, I took an iaijutsu class and completely failed at everything. Most of it due to general incompetence, but dammit, I don't think there's a bokken small enough for my arms!
"It is better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to open one’s mouth and remove all doubt." - Some guy with a snazzy hat.If you have found a martial art that is extremely difficult for you to get used to, then I'd say that is the one you should be practicing. Sort of like cross-training. Personally, I would like to practice something with lots of ground fighting and such, as I have terrible upper body strength, and get tapped out very easily.
In other news, my instructor signed me up for a martial arts tournament, without my knowledge. Team sparring is what I will be doing in particular, and it's my team vs the entire state of Michigan. *If* I win, then we will move on to national, then international.
...I have very little confidence in this; I've never gone to a tournament before...

Where were you when I laid the earth’s foundation? Tell me, if you understand. Who marked off its dimensions? Surely you know! ~ GODSWEEP THE LEG JOHNNY!
ok, in all seriousness, just relax, focus and do your best. Full contact?
Most likely, yes.
The primary things I'm going to have to focus on are stamina and power. If I can get those down, then I should be OK. Said weaknesses are probably the entire reason why he signed me up for this. Even during sparring, I'm so overcome by apathy that I have a hard time making an effort.
Relaxing is practically the very reason that I have negligible confidence in my abilities.
If I do feel pressured, then I will be compelled to try much harder, I hope.

Have a bigger fist?
If you're stronger than the person, pressing their knuckles together works, but only if their hand is limp.
A hammer works well too.
Read my stories! You do that pressing their knuckles together? I guess it is a truth in television.
...I don't think I've ever seen television do it. Just my dad. To me. Heheh.
Read my stories! Is he a Sith Lord?
No. Just willing to poke back a bit when we used to try to attack him.

Nope. Just a 9 year old sister punching a 40 year old man in the ribs.

Out of curiosity, how many people on this thread have been in a real fight? And I don't mean like between siblings or an organized match, I'm talking a street fight or bar brawl.

Now I want to learn some practical martial arts, like krav maga or sambo. Not that I'll ever use that to fight (I'm more of a "Fuck you, I'm running away or nut-kicker anyways) but so I can write some authentic fight scenes for my story.

Underneath the bridge The tarp has sprung a leak And the animals I've trapped have all become my pets...sorta kinda. I have not been in a fight. I HAVE assaulted numerous people, who are not related to me, and I did get into a minor skirmish that was rather quickly broken up, and wasn't a fight so much as a physical encounter.
d Roy: I know, right? I have been writing my own action scenes (pokes second link) and taking 3 going on 4 years of shotokan has helped IMMENSELY with it.

Read my stories!A little while ago I began German swordsmanship.
Compared to those I train with, I am remarkably good at not getting hit.

There were a couple times I was put on my ass or back by someone who had some fighting knowledge. Had someone draw a knife once. I was lucky and didn't get cut or stabbed in the scuffle.
Your talk of hardening brings back fun memories of the fore arm to fore arm drills and leg kick drills. But you are right that the hardening helps quite a bit.
