...Go with the original. Super C has those tedious overhead stages, III is even worse, and Hard Corps is a mediocre boss rush.
I disagree. I loved Super C, mostly because the unexpected perspective change stages aren't fucking annoying like in Contra. And the Fire weapon was actually useful. Also, the extra lives code is now 10 instead of 30, so don't expect the game to hold your hand any.
Wait, IS the original Contra on VC? I remember it not actually being there.
ALL CREATURE WILL DIE AND ALL THE THINGS WILL BE BROKEN. THAT'S THE LAW OF SAMURAI.- The original or Rebirth if you just want classic Contra action.
- Super C if you want some more stage variety. It introduced the overhead stages (which were essentially replacements for the "3D tunnel" sections that were in the first game).
- Contra 3 if you want a longer game (you can only face the true final boss and real ending if you beat it on Hard).
- Hard Corps if you want a bit of story with your action (and a ton of boss fights).
All that said, I'm pretty sure only Contra 3 (SNES) and Contra ReBirth are in the Wii Shop.

Contra Rebirth is a great action game for Wii Ware. It takes some getting used to the "shake wii remote to switch weapons" thing, but otherwise it's good.
Discover the rest as the game progresses.I will say that Super C is probably one of the easiest (read: less frustrating) game in the series. That's probably why it's not such a fan favorite. But I do love the variety in the bosses and locales, and it looks much more polished.

Wizard Needs Food BadlyLol @ the insinuation that the behind-the-back levels of the original aren't utterly wretched. *
I'd say forget Super C if you have a DS, since it and the original can be unlocked on Contra 4, which is an amazing game on its own.
Not having played Rebirth, I can't say if it's better/worse than III.
^While it does sound interesting that Contra 4 has both Contra 1 and Super C on it, I really don't think that I will even be able to find it at a retailer here in Australia. I am kinda leaning towards Super C from what you guys are saying. I generally enjoy variety in level design, it's why I love Treasure so much.
A corpse should be left well enough alone...Then you won't be disappointed by Super C's overhead stages. Admittedly, Contra's over the shoulder view stages are Copy And Paste levels.

Hey. Since Christmas is almost here, I have had plans to pick up games on the Virtual console. I recently got an interest in the Contra series, and I was wondering, which Contra do you think is the best on VC?
