Pssst...
They must never know.
Now I'm curious. Is there a meaning to the (western) zodiac motif spinning behind Hina in the video? Or does the zodiac motif have something to do with curses in general?
Oh great, now I'll have that song stuck in my head.
Hina-mari Damacy *
Hina Kagiyama is a curse goddess, but rather than distribute curses, she collects them. Wherever she goes, wherever she dances her dance full of spinning and twirls, she takes everyone's bad luck and rolls them up and takes them away.
It's mostly a thankless job. Those that get too close start feeling the curses she's stored within herself, so people have learned to keep their distance. In addition, her abilities are probably not very overt. I'm willing to bet you won't even know she's taking away everyone's misfortune until the day comes when she is not longer able or willing. But someone has to do it, lest half-banished curses start piling up in the streets.
Does the strain of her day job ever weigh down on her shoulders? Does she, perhaps, find her world sometimes spinning, spinning out of control? Do the curses sometimes overflow, after collecting dozens upon dozens as the days go by? I don't really know. All I see is a smiling face dancing about, taking everyone's misfortune, leaving room for more pleasant and joyful things to grow.
Well, that could have been written better. But at least I have something down. (Unlike Koishi's writeup. I never got that one done.)
This "faculty lot" you speak of sounds like a place of great power...Speaking of stuff, I saw a doujin where Suwako came out of nowhere and found Hina in some deep, dark hole trying to keep the misfortune from leaking out. If you remember that Suwako tamed the curse gods Mishaguji, you have to start thinking that a partnership between Suwako and Hina would make a lot of sense.
Hina collects curses and misfortune and brings them to Suwako to purge or bind them. And then Suwako tames a curse goddess.
Forever liveblogging the AvengersHina collects curses and misfortune and brings them to Suwako to purge or bind them. And then Suwako tames a curse goddess.
With all the magic-users in Gensokyo, you'd think it would be easier than that to find someone who can cast remove curse.
The only link I could think of would be how astrology is used for fortune-telling.
Most of the magic users don't give a crap. And the only reason I can think of for Suwako to give a crap is to help bring the mountain's native gods under the Moriya Shrine's leadership.
Forever liveblogging the AvengersIt's true, most of them aren't really the charitable type; I can't see them giving their magic away for free like that. Maybe one of Suwako's godly powers is being able to use remove curse at will as a spell-like ability. Then it wouldn't take any of her daily allotment of magic, so it would be no skin off her back.

whyyyy i want to knowwww
WHO IS THIS LOSERBecause their names both start with H, obviously.
Time keeps dragging on.how adorable they make the cutest couple
they can make a little H with their hands together
WHO IS THIS LOSEROkay that made me laugh.
Actually, what I meant was more like, "I read that story and I want it to end with Hatate giving Hina a big hug. At least."
@Kyler: Short and sweet. We need more people posting happy write-ups!
... Okay, hypocritical here, but it almost seems like people would be afraid to post theirs if it isn't sufficiently dramatic. Admittedly, non-dramatic characters are harder to write about in a substantial manner.
Also, I think the zodiac motif makes sense in terms of fate. Hina has a ton of motifs that are very malleable, after all, and fate is one of them.
As for curses, I don't like to make a sweeping statement about the peeps in Gensokyo... much less a negative one about how they don't give a damn. Probably close to canon, but eeeh. I'd prefer to think that curses are simply a special kind of thing that take a special kind of magic to counter that not everyone has.
Or in a more comedic fashion, you could simply argue that who the hell cares about magic that doesn't make shit go boom
I do like the idea of teaming up Suwako and Hina.
I passed my Japanese exam, by the way (it wasn't returned yet, but the question is only one of how well I passed it, honestly), so technically I have more time now. Unfortunately, other stuff still exists, and today, I just want to settle down and recover from studying and... other things.
But soon, I'll have the time to, like. Update the thread and everything. Imagine that.

(raises hand) Sup.
WHO IS THIS LOSERYeah, that's the reason I never got done with my writeup for Koishi. I found myself caring so much about it that I couldn't call it done until it was undeniably perfect.
Though it's possible that my having just watched Miracle Hinacle as I was writing had a hand in that.
This "faculty lot" you speak of sounds like a place of great power...Hina's got a whole lot of circular motifs, and one of them I've seen used a few times in fan works is recurrence. Fortune comes and goes at regular intervals, I guess.
^^ You have a good point. The Hina that I fought in Mountain of Faith wasn't the same Hina from my write-up. That write-up was essentially me asking "What exactly happens to all those curses? How strongly do the curses affect her?". Not really based in canon, but not completely left-field.
I do wonder about Hina's beginnings as a curse god, though. Where exactly do gods come from, anyways? How do they know what they're supposed to do? Are they actually capable of doing what they're supposed to do? I guess exploring these questions was the other point of that write-up

you'll then have a grave in the clouds where you won't lie too crampedI was under the impression that gods show up in Gensokyo when people on the other side stop believing they exist. As for the other two questions, I assume it just comes naturally to them.
Gods can actually naturally arise in Gensokyo too. Reimu accidentally creates and then kills a god in the Three Fairies manga.

Well she started worshiping a random tree and then lost interest a couple days later. Yukari gave her hell for it though.

Forever liveblogging the AvengersSo, all gods are worshipped then.
Anybody have a different interpretation of Hina's shrine?
you'll then have a grave in the clouds where you won't lie too crampedWhy would she have a shrine? The dolls are where she gets her faith from, presumably. People put their sins in the dolls and let them float away downstream. Given that she's the goddess of those dolls that would count as worship.
Remember, there are supposedly ~8,000,000 Shinto gods. Most of them are unknown and unnamed. A god in every blade of grass. They don't all get shrines, nor are all of them particular powerful. It's just a different definition of what a god is.

Not much of a secret now, is it?
