Kory: i will need to do some more testing to see if the 500KB should be lowered even more but either way everyone can relax because the database will not crash or implode in anyway due to page size so splitting pages isn't a huge priority and is just more of a suggestion. For pages that actually load slow, splitting the pages will help slower internet users navigate these pages better.
It looks like pages over 500,000 characters (html formatted, that is) are crashing the server when someone tries to edit them. programmer's whine
They need to be fixed, anyway. Way too big for one page. They need to be broken up into subpages of a reasonable size.
I'm trying to get better about communicating before big changes, so we'll let this one run for a while before taking the action. The server crashes do come under the heading of 'urgent', though.

I'm just going to leave them on the main page.

I hope people have seen the notice that all those pages will be cut and locked unless the images are put back where they belong. It would be a shame to throw away all that work because one or two people won't go along with the policy.
Goal: Clear, Concise and WittySomeone has already done it; I got two pages and will add comments to all pages to leave them on the right (someone with that authority might want to back it up with a moderator note), as well as watching them.
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanI wasn't sure whether I was supposed to copy the moderator comments to all of the subpages or just leave them on the main page. So I decided to just leave the comments on the main page.
You're supposed to copy them. Especially on pages like those, that have had quite a bit of warring over policies.
Thanks for a quick and thorough response. I'll leave it on the cutlist for a few days, so that the message can be seen by those that need to see it.
Goal: Clear, Concise and WittyIf it's the same person/people moving the pics and it happens again, let us know and we can take more aggressive action. I'm going to add "MOD NOTICE" to each of those pages and make the notice a little more stern.

I just split Characters.Neon Genesis Evangelion. Should I remove the commented out message saying "Also, this page is nearing the "danger zone" of needing to be split for size. Be judicious about additions."
Yup
Goal: Clear, Concise and WittyI just noticed that the What Could Have Been Video Games subpage is suffering a severe case of folder breakage due to the length. (It's not on the most recent list, so it's a new thing.) I was thinking of just fixing it myself, but I'm not sure how to further split it, given the current organization of the page. Thoughts?

Expergiscēre cras, medior quam hodie. (Awaken tomorrow, better than today.)Splitting it by folder seems easy enough to me. Maybe leave the really tiny ones like peripherals on the page. What's the issue, exactly?
Well, I split off the series that had their own folders into their own pages, which brought the character number down under 400K. (We can always split it further later if need be.)
...but the folders are still broken, which means they exceeded their length. Time for more edits, ho!

Expergiscēre cras, medior quam hodie. (Awaken tomorrow, better than today.)There are still 2 giant folders there. The size limit of folders and the size limit of pages aren't controlled equally.
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanWell, it's fixed now.
Expergiscēre cras, medior quam hodie. (Awaken tomorrow, better than today.)Is there a new report ready? The last was 4-5 months ago.
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanThanks.
One consideration: Shall we create a permanent Overly Long Pages page to list all the oversized articles and to periodically update it with the report?
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanThat would be my vote. Creating a brand new page for every report would be redundant.
OK, Overly Long Pages is up.
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanDespair Event Horizon is subpaged; is it indexing properly?
^ Yes but are the links to the subpages supposed to show up as DespairEventHorizon.Anime And Manga instead of Anime & Manga?
My troper wallNo, thanks for catching that; I've changed them to the / markup.
Half Life World Line is a subpage of an Unpublished Work; I've messaged the creator who has confirmed so.
I've notified the Pantheon folks as well.
On Work Pages In Main, I would propose to split by folder, really; it makes it easier to get rid of the pages once complete.

I still haven't seen that, but splitting it by headers should work. The only section I'm worried about is "Other Honnouji Students;" two characters seem too small to get their own page. Maybe putting them on the same page as "Club Presidents" would work.
