There is a difference still. This article wasn't perfect but they made a lot of good points. Especially on how they direct their spending.

The Norks just might find themselves in the short end of the stick before too long.

North Korea releases North Korea's report on the state of human rights in North Korea

Months after the publication of a damning United Nations report that catalogued widespread human rights violations in North Korea, the hermit kingdom has issued a human rights report of its own - but this time, the conclusions drawn have been far more favorable.

North Korea's report, released Saturday, said the "popular masses" in the country "enjoy genuine human rights," according to the Wall Street Journal. The report also claimed that North Korean citizens have the right to free trial and religious freedom, to stand for election, and to not be subjected to slavery or torture.

The 50,000-word report concluded that the country has the "world's most advantageous human rights system," per CNN.

What's especially funny is that this report was apparently intended as part of a diplomatic effort, not the usual comedy for feeding to their own people.

I despise hypocrisy, unless of course it is my own.

I can see where they're getting that conclusion, although I personally would have used a larger dataset than one person. (No matter how large that person is.)

The usual comedy for feeding to their own people.

We get the comedy. Their own people get some of the best propaganda in the world.

So... I just heard that NK decreased the common folk's daily rice rations to 250 grams per person. Famine expected to worsen.

Also, the Glorious Leader hasn't been seen in public or propaganda broadcasts for three weeks now - and before that, he was limping or something.

Sources?

Interesting article on NK News: Why North Korea hates the US and Vietnam doesn't.

Yet, while North Koreans continue to be subjected to regular harangues about the evils of American imperialism and catchy jingles like “Death to the American Imperialist Jackals,” their former communist brothers-in-arms in Vietnam are in the firm embrace of an alliance with the United States. Some weeks back, General Martin Dempsey, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, visited Vietnam, the first official of comparable stature to do so since the 1970s (i.e. during the Vietnam War). He was heartily welcomed by the Vietnamese who see U.S. economic power as a means by which to become rich themselves and U.S. military power as a means of warding off the ever-present threat of China.

You can listen to a nice vocal rendition of "Death to the American Imperialist Jackals" here.

Non-English, so posting it is pointless as almost no one in the thread would be able to read it.

Google translate can be surprisingly good. Also, if your foreign sources reveal where they got their info from that might be useful. If you're feeling particularly helpful, you could even translate it yourself.

Alright, so the ration decrease originates from the UN World Food Programme.

The one about the Glorious Leader is guesswork from the South Korean media, who noticed that the North Korean national media (and primary source of state propaganda, as you no doubt know) haven't mentioned him since September 3.

Now, that's interesting. Especially on the food program. NK News are also reporting that China's coal exports to NK have skyrocketed. If NK can no longer produce enough coal then that's worrying, as they relied on that as one of their few natural resources. God help them if the pits have failed.

Not sure about the second claim; it wasn't the Chosun Ilbo, was it? NK News says that Kim Jong Un was mentioned twice in NK media today, six times yesterday, and four times on Monday. Its still way down though.

Perhaps something is rotten in the state of NK (well, worse than usual)?

Thanks for sharing the sources [tup]

Hmmm. The plot, like Kim's waistline, thickens.

On the other hand, I wouldn't put it past the North Koreans to have invented this whole thing to try and guilt-trip the population. Or maybe Kim just felt like a holiday. BR Meyers has observed how bad the younger Kim is at propaganda; perhaps he just decided to take two weeks off one day and this is his advisors covering for him?

My theory is that Kim Jong Un went on a diet, in his frustration he went "If I go on a diet, THE WHOLE COUNTRY GOES ON A DIET" and then he threw a tantrum and locked himself in his room.

So the rest of the North Korean government is making precocious little girls knock on his door and sing "Do you Wanna Slaughter Capitalist Pig Dogs?"

And when that does not work, they will invite Dennis Rodman again and make him ask him if Kim wants to go play some basketball.
