Around my house, we use a lot of alternative genre names, ones which more accurately reflect our feelings/experiences.

I was wondering if anyone else does this.

Here's some of mine:

  • What they're normally called: Arcade Shooters (R-Type, 1943, Gradius etc)
  • What I call them: "the Heart-attack genre" (because these games damn near always give me one)

  • What they're normally called: PC Adventure games (King's Quest, Zork etc.)
  • What I call them: "the We-Sell-Strategy-Guides genre" aka "the walkthru genre" (because that's what you normally need in order to beat them). On TV Tropes I'd suggest calling them the Guide Dang It! genre.

Okay, share your own!

Necro, but as a kid I used the following:

Beat'em ups were "Fight games".

Rts'es were "War games" or "Leader games".

FPS'es were "Shoot games", same with non-fps'es where you shoot because I didn't make distinctions based on the camera postion..

"This wiki is stereotyped and trite. In other words, dull and uninteresting. We are about showing off how snide and sarcastic we can be.
