Necro, but as a kid I used the following:
Beat'em ups were "Fight games".
Rts'es were "War games" or "Leader games".
FPS'es were "Shoot games", same with non-fps'es where you shoot because I didn't make distinctions based on the camera postion..

Around my house, we use a lot of alternative genre names, ones which more accurately reflect our feelings/experiences.
