Guys, I heard a rather interesting piece on info on Evageeks today.

Khara seems to have acquired the Eva franchise from Gainax sometime last year. At the very least, they stopped crediting Gainax as a rightsholder in their Eva-related works, which would normally be a big no-no in copyright law.

So... yeah. It appears that Gainax licensing Khara to make Rebuild ended up raking in so much money that Khara just bought the franchise wholesale. Way to go, Anno-sensei.

... How can they buy the franchise from Anno unless he was willing to let go of it?

Anno is, and always was, Khara's president. He made Eva, but it was Gainax property. Now he owns it, not just makes it.

Oh, right. For a minute there I mixed up which company was owned by Anno. But then that still leaves the question of how Anno managed to buy the franchise out from under Gainax's nose.

Gainax is kinda vestigial right now, with almost the entire staff having left for other studios. Pretty much all of their recent projects are just coproductions with other studios, whereas Khara is getting hired left and right to make stuff.

I mean, aside from Rebuild, Khara also did animation work in Gurren Lagann, Gargantia, PMMM Rebellion, Gundam 00 The Movie, one of the Ghost in the Shell SAC movies, even Halo Legends. They are the shit. Whereas Gainax, once a big name in the industry, is slowly approaching the horizon like a setting sun.

Yeah, but... How does that lead to Gainax selling off their rights to the franchise? Heck, why did Anno split away from the company that he co-founded?

when yoh yoshinari and hiroyuki imaishi left gainax and took a lot of great people with them, gainax basically lost everything that made them a great studio.

they're pretty much dead in the water atm.

On one hand, great for Anno-sensei! grin

On the other hand, this piece of news makes me want Hiroyuki Imaishi to do the same thing with Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt. So we can finally have that season 2.

tbh gainax should just sell it to them since psg wasn't very profitable for them anyways.

So...Any news on 3.0 + 1.0 aside from a possible cover that I doubt it's legitimate? I thought Anno would have an announcement by the end of the year.

Wow, can you guys believe how buried this post was? I don't think I got a straight response for this one at all.

If I had to pick a Western Director then, complete honesty, I think Nolan would have a field day with the material.

nolan makes enjoyable movies but he has a lot of pitfalls. i'd rather see del toro on it because he knows how to bring in the fantastical/nerdy stuff while still telling a mature and engaging story. pacific rim didn't have that and was mostly a popcorn movie but that's because it's what he was trying to make.

were he to be given eva i'm fairly sure his approach would be completely different.

On a different note, is it just me, or did Rebuild give Misato a bust-size upgrade? Compare the two versions of the photo she sent to Shinji: TV series vs. Rebuild.

Rats. Forgot about Evageeks' anti-hotlinking measures. OK, uploading to imgur... There.

PS: Did you try clicking "enter" when you got that error page?

Not sure it's the hotlinking; the second link works fine.

The second one comes from Wikia, a different site.

So... How do you compare them?
