Because you are either a masochist or simply you liked End of Evangelion more that you admit to yourself?
I don't know. It is much bleaker than anything else related to Evangelion, which is saying something, and I still think that it was way too overdone, and as a result, the narrative suffered. It really doesn't feel like Anno actually had a plan for this one, in terms of plot and characters.
However, when looked at from a more formal POV, rather than from a narrative POV, 3.33 is quite a fascinating piece to watch.
L.Dragon says 3.33 is fascinating???
Good lord someone activated the fourth impact...

I honestly think 3.33 is quite possibly the definitive Evangelion. While 1.11 was a pleasant recap with some awesome animation, and 2.22 was something completely different to the rest of Eva, I felt that 3.33 did a very good job of summing up what it feels like to watch Eva for the first time. Confusing, depressing, and strangely hilarious, 3.33 earns my praise for this alone.
And it's a great action movie with some trippy bits thrown in.
I'm so sorry that my avatar doesn't appear fully in the shot, but the cat was threatening the photographer. It's also not the end of the story. I mean, it would quite the accomplishment 4.0 didn't end on a happier note.
"Canada Day is over, and now begins the endless dark of the Canada Night."I wouldn't say 2.22 was completely different. I'd say it more on line with the Action Arc episodes with combination of the Descent Arc.
What would be an awesome turn around is if 4.44 ended like The Wonderful 101 or Asuras Wrath...
Watch SymphogearEvangelion fanbase-related question:
We all know how Robin Williams is a fan of Evangelion, right?
Well, has he ever explained why he's a fan of it?
I'm just asking.
Okay Funi, theatrical releases are winding down. Can I have a release date now?
That is, unless they decide to extend its theatrical run. Rebellion proved how popular these sort of anime movie events can be after all.
As for why I suddenly found 3.33 fascinating from a formal (key word being formal) POV, I guess it's due to me playing too much Metal Gear Solid 2. Seriously though, like the aforementioned game, 3.33 twists and plays with the events, characters, and set pieces to subvert and toy with the expectations of the audience. I'll just post what I said to Scherzo and Firestorm during a chat, and see what you guys think. Keep in mind that it is inspired by the Driving Off The Mag analysis of MGS 2, which I strongly recommend you check out to further see my point.
"Like MGS 2, many of the major plot points in 3.0 seem specifically designed to subvert and toy with many of the situations seen in the original series, and the previous two films. However they are all twisted in some way, as to deny both Shinji and the viewer the expected catharsis and growth that they hoped for.
Take Kaworu's death scene for example. His demise in the end mirrors his decapitation in the original series. However, here his head blows up, while the rest of his body remains intact, the opposite of his original death. He also triggered his own death, as opposed to asking Shinji to do the deed. Most importantly, Kaworu's death in the original succeeded in preventing the 3I, thus making his death that much more meaningful. In 3.0, his death failed to stop it, instead having Mari be the one to cancel it. Kaworu's death mirrored the original's, yet denied the same sort of catharsis that it originally had."
"The opening fight between Asuka and the orbiting Angel, with Shinji unconsciously saving her resembles the Sandalphon fight. Both fights involved Asuka fighting in an unexplored and hazardous area, lava in the original, and space in 3.0. in both fights, Asuka was nearly taken down, only saved at the last minute by Shinji.
However, whereas the outcome of the original led to her gaining some begrudging respect for him, evidenced by her smiling and the like, the latter's outcome led to her treating him like a child and berating him. Not to mention that, rather than being a conscious effort like the original, here, Shinji did it unknowingly. Once again, 3.0 took the actions of the original and repeated them, but denied the catharsis of it."
What say you?
In principle, I agree with the point you're driving at, but surely the fight at the beginning is meant to invoke Arael, not Sandalphon.

"Canada Day is over, and now begins the endless dark of the Canada Night."Kaworu's death did help to bring it to an end though. Cause it started falling and weakened with his death, allowing Mari to get on it and try to eject the entry plug. Granted his death didn't end it completely like he thought it would.
Every accusation by the GOP is ALWAYS a confession. This post should be my review of 3.33...
But Funimation hasn't said a thing about the pushed back release date since they announced they were changing the release date. It's this total lack of information from them that's getting under my skin.
Ah right I totally forgot the original release date would've been around now.
Yeah it's stressful, but imagine being in a country like Australia where the release date will be even later. Originally we were set for March and with the delay now we have no idea when it's coming.
It doesn't fill me with hope that the apparent UK date is August 25
I'm on Youtube Reviewing Things Cause I can.Necroing and double posting in this thread because there's updates abound.
Spike Spencer is currently in Dallas re-recording lines for 3.33. As confirmed by his newsletter and this picture from his page.
So tying in with Funi's claim of Working "closely" with Studio Khara to "make it closer to original vision.", it seems that 3.33's delay is largely attributed to Khara working with Funi to redo (sorry) the dub so it could tie in closer to the original subs and perhaps even 4.0.
Either way it's reasonably good news in the least and means that the dub is coming.
I'm on Youtube Reviewing Things Cause I can.Kinda got me miffed though, I liked some of the Woolseyisms in the Theatrical Dub. Asuka calling Shinji an 'Asshole' sticks out to me the most.
These are the words that shall come from my mouth. I shall be known for speaking them.I'm going to hope that Funi's spent the past few months having people come in when they were available rather than wait for everyone to not be busy at the same time. At this rate, it feels like I'll end up waiting a whole year since I placed my pre-order. *crawls back under desk and resumes fetal position*
I wonder what it was specifically about the dub that Khara took issues with.
Once the DVD finally comes out, I look forward to seeing ludicrous over-analysis of differences between the old and new dubs, and people trying to work out their significance.
The owner of this account is temporarily unavailable. Please leave your number and call again later.Isn't it like that with this entire series?
"Please crush me with your heels Esdeath-sama!Only issue is no one will have access to the old 3.0 dub.
These are the words that shall come from my mouth. I shall be known for speaking them. There's probably cam recordings floating around somewhere.
Not Three Laws compliant.
HHHHHHHH ohkay. Considering the only reason I even gave the Rebuild of Evangelion films a chance was because I wanted to pretend episodes 25 and 26, and especially End of Evangelion never happened, in 3.33, if Shinji's put in a worst spot than he was in Eo E, and when the story and universe mechanics jumps completely off the rails (jailbait disease, anyone?) why am I even watching this?
