No 40K thread yet? I'm surprised. Nay, shocked, shocked I say to discover there's gambling going on in this establishment...

I'm eagerly anticipating the imminent 5th Edition release, personally, but I was interested to know if anyone here plays and has a differing opinion on it. There are certainly plenty of people out there who seem to think that 40K 4th edition "only just" came out and that a new edition isn't needed. Anyone?

Warhammer Fantasy (including Age of Sigmar and WFRP) has its own thread here.

the "Adam Kadmon" thing does not work though, for The Emperor is not the Original Man, he is the NEW Man, plus we all know he is really called Bruce Campbell

Say, which WH 40 K author do you think captured the Emperor's character the best? I'm thinking of throwing in said author's name into Empy's Overly Long Name as a homage to the guy for what he did.

Mmmmmm, is hard to said since the empero is not really a chararter but a background thing from most part, and in canon is not show that much

in Bill king short story is hard to said since king like to downplay the epic A LOT, from most part I like him in the inquisition trilogy, is brief but SURE is once scene wonder

[up][up][up]Looking good. Simple but effective.

Speaking of Necrons, today's 2nd Edition Thursday, the first Necrons.

The first Necrons were released the January 1998 White Dwarf when the models looked like this. Necron Warriors cost 44 points each and had the following statline: M4 WS4 BS4 S4 T5 W1 I2 A1 Ld10

Necron warriors were armend with a Necron Gauss-Flyer Gun. Their stats were: Short Range 0-6" with a +1 To Hit Modifier; Long Range 6-24"; Strength 4; Damage 1; Save Modifier -2; Vehicle Armour Penetration D6+4. They also had the Metal Flayer special rule: This rule was only effective against vehicles and meant that if a player rolled a 6 for armour penetration then they could add a further D6 to the penetration score.

Necron Warriors were constructed from a super hard hyper-alloy that gave them a 2+ save on a D6.

Necron Warriors also had the following special rules:

Repair or "I'll be Back!: If a Necron was reduced to 0 Wounds then they weren't removed but put on their side. While on their side the model took no part in the game and couldn't be harmed in any way. At the start of each Necron turn the player rolled a D6 for each model on its side with the following results: 1 - The Necron is beyond repair and fades away; 2-5 - The Necron is still damaged and remains on its side; 6 - The Necron is repaired and stands up. the model can move and fight normally that turn.

Unit Coherency: Necron Warriors follow the usual 2" Unit Coherency rule but damaged models on their side no longer have to stay within Coherency. When a damaged model stands back up however it has to move towards the nearest Necron unit of the same type at its normal move and join up with them as soon as possible, even if it wasn't their original unit. Individual Necrons can also join up with other individual Necrons to form a new unit. While on their own the model may not shoot but could otherwise act normally.

Leadership: Necrons never took Leadership tests, making their Ld of 10 redundant. Necron forces could fade and vanish though if they were reduced to 25% or less of their starting number. Damaged Necrons on their side don't count towards the number of Necrons still on the battlefield.

Disruptor Zone: Enemy technical devices, machines and constructions which employ electrical or magnetic energy are liable to be affected by the mysterious power of the Necrons. Any model within 6" of a Necron suffered the following penalties: Vehicles and dreadnoughts within 6" at the start of their turn had to roll a D6. On a 1-3 the vehicle couldn't move. On a 4-6 their movement is halved for that turn; Any weapon attempting to shoot suffered a -1 To Hit for each Necron within 6"; In hand-to-hand combat, models used their own Strength rather than the Strength of their weapons.

So they were very tough ("compensated" by the phase out rule) from the start, but possibly a bit less destructive?

[up]Yeah pretty much. As now they were also powerful against vehicles but weak against hordes and there weren't many of them (Necron Warriors were 14 points more than a basic Space Marine).

[up] There is the fact that 2nd edition used WHFB style rules for working out armour saves though, so the 2+ saves for the Warriors wouldn't be a good as it would be in the current edition.

I had another Throne of Skulls event at Warhammer World this weekend. I took my Black Wings army and my results for the five games were 1 win, 1 draw and 3 losses.

The event was a Supremacy event that used the Supremacy Tactical Objectives rather than the regular ones and they were reasonably entertaining to use.

My first game was against Craftworld Eldar and was the game that I won. I did very well in the first half of the battle and managed to kill his Wraithknight, Wraithlord and some of his Wraithguard (he was playing Iyanden). When his Wraithfighter came on though things began to change as it killed my Land Raider and 3 squads of Tactical Marines by itself. By the end of the game I only had 5 models left on the board while he had 4.

The second game was against a Razorback Horde Ultramarines army. The guy didn't know the rules too well but it was still fun game with the result of a draw due to the shear number of models he had able to contest objectives.

The third game was against an Imperial Knight army and I lost this badly as my army couldn't deal with multiple Super-Heavy units. The funniest part of the game was in the final turn when my only surviving unit, a Hunter AA Whirlwind, tried to damage a Knight by ramming it. It didn't work but it was still entertaining.

My fourth game was against Tau resulting in another loss. The enemy had lots of units with Interceptor meaning that my Drop Pod Insersion took massive casualties when they first deployed, reducing my firepower considerably. The Land Raider was taken out by a Hammerhead on the first turn although my Attack Bike got revenge a turn or two later with its multi-melta.

The final game was against Space Wolves and it was another game that I had little chance of winning as the opponent had a Squadron of Stormwolves using the new Death from the Skies rules, a Forge World Fire Raptor Gunship and a Typhon Super-Heavy Tank. Needless to say I was wiped out by this massive amount of firepower (especially after the Typhon wiped out my Centurions on the first turn of the game after he seized the initiative) but there were still some fun moments such as a lone Tactical Marine surviving three rounds of combat with a squad of Grey Hunters.

Overall it was a fun weekend that ended with my usual win-loss ratio. My squad of the MVP for the weekend has to be the Centurions. They survived a tone of fire with only the Knights and Typhon out shooting them. The worst performing unit were the Assault squad who did nothing but die the entire weekend.

As for the other armies at the event. There were a lot of Imperial Knights with at least six armies made up solely of Knights and a lot of other armies having one or two as allies. Flyers weren't too prevalent with the Space Wolf guy I fight against seeming to have the most Flyer heavy army.

Yesterday's Dark Heresy session was hilarious and completely unproductive.

We learned a valuable lesson though, before some exterior force wiped it from our minds:

[up][up][up] Sounds like a fun time, losses and all.

I played my 1500 pt. expansion league game Saturday to a 10-3 loss. Opponent played Eldar (Crimson Hunter formation and the rest on jetbikes) with a Dark Eldar formation consisting of Talos engines as allies. I put a serious hurt on the Talos formation but spread my forces out across too much of the board and wasn't able to aggressively go after his bikes, my Warlord and Dev Centurions ran off the board, and he shot down my Stormtalon on turn 2. The best part about the whole thing was pulling off Shifting Worldscape three times before my Librarian was killed...I just wish I could've capitalized on it.

Personally I think the coolest looking army there was the Imperial Knight army tearing some 'nids to pieces. I think I was the best dressed one there though.

[up]They look good. I like the effect on the wires.

In rumour news: The 8th Edition may be released in conjunction with the 30th Anniversary of 40K. The story will advance from 5 minutes to midnight on the 40K Doomsday Clock to 1 minute to midnight. The Edition is apparently being described as attempting to do an End Times that never actually ends.

I'm.... not certain how I feel about that, if by "End Times that never actually ends" they mean have a major shakeup of the galactic order and ADVANCE THE PLOT, while not ending the 40k Universe... I'm cool with that, if by that they mean some sort of timey wimey stuff to create a perpetual conflict... fuck. that. shit.
