So where is your user picture from? Care to share what pics you use on other forums? (I know we used to have a thread about this, but it seems it was lost in The Great Crash.)
My current avatar, and all my previous avatars, are from Gunnerkrigg Court. So it's probably safe to assume that all my future avatars will be from there as well.

I use Photofiltre myself...Not that it changes much.
Honestly, I've never had a single issue with my files size. All of my avatars are 100x100 Jpegs 90% compression, if that helps.

You're better off with an actual computer program(I.E. Paint). Those things probably aren't programmed as well.

I haven't heard of that. :P If you want something simpler than GIMP, though, I suggest Paint.NET (what MS Paint should be).

If you click the button above your own post, second from the left (directly to the right of the PM button), it links you to your avatar gallery. You can share avatars you have there with other tropers.
There is also an option in your user profile that toggles whether or not you can receive avatars from other people (so you don't have to be spammed with people sending you avatars you don't want).

I crop out a square using Paint (not even the .NET version, just old and simple) and then save them through Ifran View (which I use for all my picture viewing). I either set them as maximum quality JPG or maximum compression PNG, depending on the picture (rule of thumb is that pictures with lots of gradients are good for JPG while flat colours are good for PNG - for instance, Homestuck avatars get compressed marvellously by PNG, but turn smudged all over and still way too big as JPG, meanwhile photos are compressed fine without loss in looks by JPG while PNG leaves them at huge size)
