If you watch the video, it starts with the declaration that "Disney has bought Doctor Who", followed by sirens going off and the presenter frantically backtracking and clarifying that they've bought broadcast rights. RASTON'D

(Who wants to bet that the BBC is deliberately going "well, no, Who hasn't been sold to a private company, but wouldn't it be awful if it were? Please contact your representatives and tell them to keep the BBC!")

Maybe you'd be less disappointed if you stopped expecting things to be Carmen Sandiego movies.

I'm actually okay with it.

I think we needed an extra impetus towards space travel again.

Oh my God.

If I wasn't already committed to watching the entire televised run, this single story might have put me off the show.

That was terrible. I can't think of a single redeeming factor of this garbage story.

Well, I guess it introduced K-9, so there's that.

[up]Gooooooooooooooooooooooood...

Seriously though, this season was something of a transitional one, and it shows. With Hinchcliffe and his way of doing things out the window, the show spent an entire season struggling to find itself again, resulting in a rocky season that's probably one of the lesser ones in the shows' history. There are a few bright spots, like the Sun Makers, but even that's still not the best the show has to offer. But trust me; things will get better in the next season. It's still not always going to be fantastic, but things are going to get better compared to the season you're on now. (Which means that, yes, Invisible Enemy isn't a one-time deal. Unfortunately.)

[up]Got back from the con a few hours ago,and it was a blast. The highlight was getting to meet Mr.Baker himself, and I don't just mean during a panel; on my way to the Art Dealers' Room, I happened to notice that Colin was right behind me. All I had to do was move one millimeter his direction, and I'd have had the honor being able to physically touch the Sixth Doctor. I thought about just introducing myself and saying hi, but, I don't know; it just didn't feel 'right' somehow. Can't really say why. But regardless, considering Colins' my second favorite Doctor, (Sylvesters' my #1,) this will probably go down one as one of the hightlights of my entire existence in any case. (And yes, his panel was very good as well; he's a great, funny guy with a long varied history that goes far beyond Doctor Who, and even if he never played the Doctor, it would still have been an honor to meet the man. Him playing the Doctor just makes it even more of an honor than it already was.)

Oh, and I found this:

It would have been 'Doctor Who Worst Line Deliveries DANCE MIX', but that seemed to not want to link correctly, so you get this instead. Has to be better than the actual 1993 anniversary special, in any case.tongue

So I happened to watch a rerun of The Long Game followed by Father's day, and I wondered if some of the bile I've read here being directed at Ten didn't somehow affect me, as I seem to be developing a case of Rose-phobia, or, more precisely, a phobia of the Doctor's moral myopia whenever Rose is concerned. Then again, Nine is really not my favourite of the new era Doctors (and Rose is becoming one of my least favourite new companions very fast). Breaking the laws of time and getting scott-free with it should remain a Time Lord priviledge. tongue

So, I started watching Series 3 last night, and managed to get up to Daleks in Manhatten/Evolution of the Daleks, (And why can't they just stick with one name for the multi-parters? It worked for the Classic Series, why not here?) and while it's not quite one of those episodes that makes you wonder why you even bother watching the show, it comes pretty close. Now, let's start with the obvious; the plot to makes humans out of Daleks doesn't make a lick of sense, though it doesn't have anything to do with Dalek Sec merging with Diagoras. If you're going to to make new Daleks, then you'd think they would, you know, look like Daleks? Of course, when Sec is in charge of the operation, it does make sense, as he wants the Daleks to move forward; to get out of their armor, and and evolve; to progress. However, when the other Daleks take over, that's when the plot stops making sense; if they want Daleks to remain pure, then why are calling beings who are obviously human 'Dalek'? It doesn't matter if they have 'Dalek DNA', or think like Daleks,; they're still not Daleks, and one of the 'human-Daleks' even points this out at the end. They're not Daleks, they're slave labor. And yet, both the Daleks and the story itself seem to think otherwise.

But that's not my main problem with the story. I've actually got two: One is that there is no reason to have this set in the Great Depression. Absolutely none. Yeah, I know that using the Empire State Building is part of the plan, but they could easily use some other tall building, or just build another one on some distant planet or in the future, and the story could still function without a hitch. This didn't have to be set in New York in the 30's, and there's nothing, not even thematically, that connects the story to that setting. Which makes my other big problem with the story all the more puzzling.

The second real problem I have with this story, and the one that ultimately kills it for me, is the writing. It's ham-fisted, over-written, and comes at you with the subtlety of a hammer in the face. Of course, part of this is because the writer really wanted to address the Great Depression, and I don't have a problem with that; what I do have a problem with is doing so as if no-one had ever heard of it, (come on, Britain can't be that ignorant of other cultures, can they?) and as if we need it shoved in our faces to grasp the concept. Characters go on and on explaining Hooverville, how people need to stick together, how you need to keep on going out on stage or else you go to the slums, etc; instead of showing us all of this, they tell us about it, and what makes it all truly egregious is that we didn't need to know any of this, because the core story doesn't have anything to do with the Great Depression. If you're going to give us a poorly written lecture on the Great Depression, then the least you can do is tie it together thematically with the main plot — get some use out of it — but they don't. And so, all of this focus on the Depression — all of which is again not very well written — just comes across as pointless.

And the bad writing doesn't just limit itself to the Depression material; it bleeds over into the main story as well, to the point where even that get tedious to sit through. All in all, it's just not a very good story, which is a shame, because I'm a sucker for a good period piece; not so much for bad ones. (Also, Solomon's heart-to-heart talk with the Daleks went as exactly as I thought it would. Seriously, what did he think was going to happen? They'd just sit down and start singing Kumbaya over the campfire? Oh, yeah, and Tens' still a dick. I don't dislike him as much as I used to, but I still don't like him much either. Bleh.)

Poor Daleks in Manhattan/Evolution of the Daleks. You stuff one human up a Dalek's butt, you know you're doomed.

All the Ewoks will look up and shout, "Save us from the Klingons!" And I'll whisper, "Why so serious?"

I still don't understand what those pig-men creatures actually were in the Daleks of Manhattan 2 parter. Like....what? Were they also daleks? it's been a while since I watched it.

They were human slaves to the Daleks that the Daleks...gave pig DNA for...some...reason...

Its been a while since I watched it, too, actually.
