Man, I just read Start of Darkness. Redcloak's whole story is just maddeningly tragic. Also, I never want to play in your standard D&D-style world again; I'll be too busy thinking about what a Crapsack World it is for NPC races. Now there's the mark of a good Deconstruction...

Hilarity ensues. I hope Roy went back to that D&D game, he really wouldn't want to see this...

Has Celia always been this naive? Well, I guess since she's the just-graduated-college-then-went-back type, it fits.

No, I'd definitely say she hasn't been this bad before.

The madness continues.

And once again, the Mark of Justice is more a hindrance than a help. Looks like they kept Belkar around for a reason.

I'm doing an Archive Sip on this at the moment, currently around 350. I'll catch up fairly soon.

Well the Mark of Justice was never supposed to be a help really.

But keep in mind in Belkar wasn't totally delutional right now he would probably not be so anxious to helpful and instead be buying his own Roy Doll and laughing at the emotional pain it gave everyone else.

While I believe it is possible to resurrect someone without the body if you get a high enough level cleric and fork over enough dough, I'm pretty sure you can't ever resurrect someone whose body is currently being used for an undead (this learned, of course, from OOTS forums relating to Roy's death), and I have to assume bone golems count.

bone golems count as enemies yes?

so all they have to do is defeat him (made easier by the fact that he isn't a flesh golem so his girlfriends lightning spells could work)

unless he's the type of RPG golem that disintegrates after being defeated

For something only tangentially related to the discussion on hand (and by 'tangentially' I mean that it has to do with OOTS), the first (and therefore almost by default being the most enduring) impression I received of Miko Miyazaki was this strip. The simple image of there standing there staring down at her arms in shock, her dazed mumuring to herself, the part where she mutters that it isn't fair, that she needs time to think (and not realizing that it would have been a better idea about 30 seconds ago), and especially the strange fact that I think the (o o) expression works better with her than almost anyone else (I think it's the hair)...

Well, it made me a fan of her on the spot. Without me even knowing a whole lot of her aside from the one strip. (Which was enough to get a pretty good glimpse of her general character actually, given that what Roy said about her was accurate.)

Then later I archived trawled the entirety of OOTS, and, Deconstruction of her as the Knight Templar and Lawful Stupid person aside, I still grew to like her more as a character. Heck, even I'm not really sure why, although I think I could puzzle it out if given enough time.

So, to whit - I'm pretty bummed that she died.

(Also, I like No. 250 because it runs a rather large gamut of Miko's expressions, ranging from aforementioned (o o) eyes to the one of two times when she actually smiles. (The other being her death scene.))

I agree...I was really sympathetic with her. In fact, for a while, I thought of her as The Woobie, given how much abuse everyone heaps on her (to some degree she earns it, but I think the way the Oot S treated her was disproportionate - not to mention the forum, ye gods!) and by the way Roy objectifies her, and everyone else assumes this is the only possible way anything she says or represents can be valid. I was actually pretty sure that it was going to be the typical "abrasive, socially inept but well-meaning character is softened by her time with others" plot, and she'd be a Sixth Ranger, but...in hindsight that would have been kind of cliche.

And the last two panels of 409, the one after the "first impression" you linked, were kind of heartbreaking

I guess that demonstrates how much these things are subjective. I don't know how she's treated on the Oot S forum, not being a member of said forum, but I always saw Miko as one of those "love-to-hate" type characters - certainly not The Scrappy, but a very well written villain. In fact, I always saw her as the most dangerous type of villain, because she has very strict morals, but is seemingly unable to take responsibility for her own actions. Combine that with her desire to kill evildoers, and you end up with a frankly alarming character who attacks with little provocation, because she sees everything in black and white: case in point, executing Shojo without a trial, based on a deduction that was in fact false.

The one point where I truly felt sorry for Miko was when she died.

I agree; I always liked Miko as a villain, plain and simple. Not as a hero or someone I needed to see redeemed, not a scrappy or a burden on the series. . . just a very, very well written villain.

Anyways, it looks like Rich may be about to pull the rug out from under us by switching from Haley's party to Elan's party just when Haley's party is in a situation an order of magnitude more suspenseful. Please don't do that, Rich.

Oh, you know it. Ah well.

Is it just me, or has the art looked a tad bit cleaner the past strip or two?

Heh, that was great. Hooray for Mook Face Turns! I'm a little surprised she didn't just instantly die, it seemed like THE perfect set up for a quick Redemption Equals Death. Glad she didn't though, she's cool. I like Elan's way of convincing Therkla - "You know, just 'cause I can't be your boyfriend doesn't mean you have to kill me." That's probably the most logical statement he's ever made.

Anyway, this is an interesting scene. Who was hit? It doesn't look like whoever had the bow (who I think is someone we don't know), and I don't think either V or Durkon would say "Oww. Crap."

Durkon's the bush, I think. Glad to see that Elan's being reasonable.

I thought it was pretty clear that the tree was saying "ow." Or rather the person hiding in the tree suit (maybe, I think, that might be blood coming from the shuriken wound and trees don't bleed).

The question is who the person in the tree suit that got hit might be. We know where Durkon and V are.

I'm guessing it's not Hinjo, because he's probably the one with the sword.

Oh okay, that question makes more sense now. The blue weapons point toward azure city citizens, I would guess enemies of Hinjo.

Doubtful; at least Durkon is working with them, whoever they are. And the Katana is rather Sapphire Guard-y.

The weapons on the left match Hinjo's and Lien's in detail (other Sapphire Guard swords have different coloration), and the smiting the spear-tree threatens is a paladin ability.

V's probably in the bunch - it's far more likely that they were transmuted to trees than actually dressing up as foliage - you'll note we see no hands holding the weapon.

Also, I call 'Eagle Eyes' Pete dying horribly.

i call his death being ironic no matter what kind of death, there's a good chance that it's related to him being blind
