There's a dramatic cost to breaking the fourth wall - particularly in such a way as not to simply remind the audience that they are reading a story, but that the characters know, in-universe, that they're in one as well.

Well, it isn't entirely a joke, given that that is is a real produce which is genuinely available.

[up][up]That cost was paid a long time ago. Pretty sure the characters were self-aware (that they lived in a D&D world, at least) from strip one.

I've got fanfics for Frozen, Spectacular Spider-Man, Crash Bandicoot, and Spyro the Dragon.

When a plot point is resolved by a character stealing a diamond from the cast intro page and leaving an IOU, it's safe to say the fourth wall has been stabbed, buried in a shallow grave and danced upon by a passing troupe of conga-lining monkeys.

Yeup, when the stakes matter these jokes go away, as has been the tradition since serious stuff started happening.

Despite my screen-name, ranting to you about One Piece is not my top priority.

[up]And sometimes there's a taco party and the heart-wrenching death of someone's brother all in the same scene.

I've got fanfics for Frozen, Spectacular Spider-Man, Crash Bandicoot, and Spyro the Dragon.

We are getting quite close to the climax, and though we just started a new book we're right in the middle of a spy infiltration. So it's a little surprising that that clown has not been shooed out.

Well, the joking and fourth-wall-breaking didn't end after V committed genocide (maybe technically xenocide, although how the concept of 'species' can work in a universe where apparently everything can interbreed is a question I don't want to even attempt to consider), so I suppose there's no reason to expect that it will stop now.

I think it works okay for a webcomic, but it would feel weirder when reading the comic in book form.

[up]I really don't think OOTS would translate well into a prose novel. Not without gutting pretty much all the humor and charm, anyways.

They've already shilled the first prequel book back when Hayley went to Greysky. So there's at least precedent.

What's up with the "Ding!" when Elan is asking about sidequests? It looks the same as when characters level up, but nobody pays it any attention.

So I'm a writer...

I think it could still be called genocide, seeing as it targets the genes of a specific creature. It's just somewhat more accurately targeted than standard examples.

"I'm not entirely comfortable with the "hamfisted product placement". Somehow it doesn't feel tongue-in-cheek enough to be entirely a joke."

It's not entirely a joke, no. I'm not sure it's strictly speaking product placement, either: nobody paid him to do it, he's just saying "Pay for the thing you're already reading, if you feel like it!"

Besides, I've seen comedy films put actual product placement in in much the same way, making it so blatant as to become a joke in its own right.

I just started reading this a few days ago. I started from 900 first, up until the latest. Of course I began from the...beginning afterwards. I'm at 225.

I'm reading this because it's interesting. I think. Whiskey, Tango, Foxtrot, over.

New comic.

I think Blackwing is too distracted to get it.

I love how accommodating this guy is! He doesn't argue with Blackwing or anything, he just immediately and chipperly comes up with a compromise.

Hell, is he even charging for this? It doesn't seem like it.

Maybe you'd be less disappointed if you stopped expecting things to be Carmen Sandiego movies.
