Gunnerkrigg Court

The comic is vaguely "today", but the Court is enough cut off from the outside world that we don't get a lot of references to date it too much.

The kids do have mp3 players at least. If you want to incorporate everything Tom's ever drawn, he did a picture on Tumblr of Kat listening to Orbital's 2012 album Wonky.

It just occurred to me we have never seem a cellphone in the story, have we?

Jones has a cell phone. Tony used it to speak to Annie in that one chapter.

An actual cell phone would need a sim card and stuff so this makes sense.

They also played Metal Gear, so it's either after that came out or Kojima's a time traveler to alternate dimensions.

Which, I mean, I could totally see.

That page makes me think that either Eglamore is unaware of what's going on or he's wrapped in chains and tossed in a vault somewhere because otherwise Tony would be short one head.

Because murder is the default response for everyone involved.

Killing him would be...well, overkill, but I fully expect that if they're ever shown interacting, he'll give Anthony the coldest shoulder this side of that iceberg. The people whose reactions I'm most interested in are Kat's parents.

Possibly...it wouldn't be seemly for Court faculty to come to fisticuffs, but I could see him socking Anthony if his buttons got pushed hard enough.

He'd probably want to do that even if Anthony was the greatest dad ever.

Eglamore managed to reconcile with Renard, who killed his best friend. So I don't think it's Eggers' fault that his relationship with Tony is so strained.

Eglamore's no Snape.

I thought Eglamore just tolerated Renard and even then it's mostly because he protects Annie. Tony is actively traumatizing her.

Eglamore seems pretty chill with Renard.

I figure Eglamore would hate him just because he "took" Surma from him. Eggy has all sorts of emotional issues when it comes to her and Annie, which the latter has noticed.

...honestly I haven't seen that in him.

like, the person he should be most mad at for "taking" Surma is Anthony. if, in fact, he sees Surma as an object and not a person. but...he called Annie by her mother's name when she was in danger of dying. that says to me that his mental image of Surma is as it was when she was in high school, when he knew her. which...is understandable.

and he's backed away from Annie and hasn't intruded in her life since she made it clear he made her uncomfortable. their relationship has been mainly professional.

...idk my reread has stirred up a lot of positive Eglamore feelings. sure he's a tool of the Court but he doesn't exactly have reason (as far as we know) to disbelieve the cause, y'know?

Why would his image be of teenage Surma? It's not like he had no contact with her as an adult.

-shrug- i thought that he didn't, but i could be wrong. and, i mean, memory is a funny place, y'know? things shift around and collate over the years. i'm pretty sure that surma and anthony didn't have contact with the court after they left, but idk where to find that information

You're not alone. I also thought that, upon leaving school and getting married, both Surma and Tony basically dropped off the grid. :/

Maybe I need to reread things. I was under the impression they stayed at the Court until shortly before Annie was born.

Tony and James associated with eachother only through mutual friendship with Donald and later Surma. If they don't get along, it's just because some people just don't, not because one of them is at fault for not rolling out the Heterosexual Life-Partners welcoming mat.

If James gets along with Renard it's because he's been able to witness Renard's change in attitude over the months / years. If Tony has experienced any growth James hasn't been around to see it and isn't likely to give Tony the benefit of the doubt when Tony still outwardly appears to be the same cold emotionless guy he was when they were kids.
