Why does Eglamore look about 27 while the rest of them look 15?

Surma has a point, kind of hard to maintain a relationship with someone if they are never around. And if he's upset about being cheated on, don't hurt Tony.

I get the feeling what he's going to do is only gonna make Tony more withdrawn.

Or it could be this little outburst is what gets Surma all fired up (pardon the pun) (although it might be more than just a pun) and pushes her right into Tony's arms for good.

Same reason why George suddenly grew and got buff: being the dragonslayer apparently affects your body.

Yup, apparently an effect of the magical training they undergo. George got swole over the span of a summer, if I remember correctly.

I'm not excusing Eglamore's behaviour here, he shouldn't beat on Tony. But man, Surma pulled a pretty shitty move on him. I can understand his frustration.

That being said, Surma made a smart move in announcing this with all of her friends present. If Eglamore turns violent and really decides to hurt Tony, it's probably going to be useful to have a couple of people around to stop him.

I can understand him being angry as well, but he should really sort this out with Surma, instead of attacking Tony.

Interesting new persective on Eggie, especially in regards to Tony. Before he always came across as the good guy and Tony as an asshole, now he seems more of a Jerk Jock. Maybe because this is the past, maybe because the story is being told from a specific persons viewpoint, maybe both?

I don't know, I think the story has been letting us know that James's attitude towards Surma was unhealthy ever since he called Annie by her name. There's also the part where he mocked Tony's speech patterns, so we knew not all of his enmity is mature and justified.

Yeah Eglamore was never really of fan of Tony, even before Surma left him.

I am guessing shortly after this is when he starts whatever the hell is his relationship with Jones? I am hoping we get some more insight into those two. They act intimate around each other, so the first indication is that they are lovers. But I guess it could also be seen as a particularly creepy mother-son thing? Jones is several millions of years his senior after all.

Also, I guess that this scene from the chapter "The Stone" is supposed to have happened immediately after today's chapter.

We were seeing Tony in his withdrawn and emotionally traumatised circumstances.
Now we're seeing Eglamore in his dark emotional moment.

I understand hi position. Taking it out on Tony, I mean. He can't accept that Tony without doing anything unusual got his girlfriend to break up with him when, so far as he knew, their relationship was perfectly happy. After all, look how boring he is! It's also difficult to act threatening towards the girl he loves rather than that obnoxious plain guy who always acts distant and stuck up.

It doesn't mean he's right, but his behavior isn't a sign that he's a terrible person, just really upset because his girlfriend did something very upsetting.

@26131 Before we get all down on Surma here, were she and Eglamore even together at all? So far as I can tell, they actually weren't - they both wanted to be together, but it sounds like Eglamore deliberately kept his distance until he was done with his dragonslayer prep. If my read on the situation is correct, then Surma doesn't owe him a damned thing - what she did wasn't shitty at all, and it's Eglamore's fault that a relationship between the two never happened.

I'm not saying Eglamore shouldn't feel angry... but he should only be angry at himself. It's his own damn fault.

I'm not sure where you're getting that from? "It just wasn't working anymore!", rather implies that something had been working before.

I feel that it was pretty explicit that Surma and Eglamore were together. Her initial comment of "You are never around!" felt like an indication that they were in a relationship together, but it had become strained because of his Dragonslayer training.

And if they weren't explicitly together, why would Surma even bother telling him that she is with Tony now? And Tony explicitly said "But Surma, what about James?" when Surma made a move on him.

I get what you are saying: if they aren't officially a couple, then Eglamore is just acting like an entitled ass. But I think we are supposed to understand that they are indeed a couple and what Surma did was infidelity, plain and simple.

James is still in the wrong for physically intimidating Tony, though, regardless of the circumstances.

Surma did give Eglamore a pocketknife with "James, with love, Surma" inscribed on the handle.

I have been thinking for a while about the parallels between Snape and Eglamore, actually.

I guess Eglamore is a slightly more healthy version of Snape? Because he didn't , you know, literally succumb to the temptation of the forces of Evil because his high-school crush rejected him?

I mean in general, there are a lot of parallels you can draw between Harry Potter and Gunnerkrigg, what with both being about a young quasi-orphaned child who attends a magical Academy of Adventure somewhere in the UK, becomes friends with an extremely clever fellow student and has been granted great power thanks to the sacrifice of their mother.
