When in doubt, refer to the Ember Island Players.

When in doubt, film the Ember Island Players.

The Last Airbender could have gotten away with a lot if it'd gone for Ember Island silly parody. I would watch a feature-length Ember Island Players production.

It wouldn't shock me if Mai and Ty Lee were removed entirely from the film version.

Well the sequel won't happen, so there's not really much sense in going "Ha, let's make fun of something that doesn't exist", is there?

Well, there's not much else to talk about right now for Last Airbender. "Smoke and Shadow" is still a few months from now, and the "Legacy" hardcover book is further still.

^^ It's the internet, reaffirming "cool kid" status by mocking something that failed (or in this case is widely believed to be a failure in the making) is always relevant. tongue

I will ask—is Airbender 2 staked through, once and for all? I know it seems silly, five years after the fact, but MNS is just so stubborn and clueless. Is there Word of God that confirms the seemingly obviously Oh Hell No?

The last Shyamalan ever spoke of a possible sequel, he said that we'll know within a few months whether they'll be greenlit for a second film.

That was five years ago. In absence of a green light, no film will be made.

Why would Mai and Ty Lee be excluded from a second Last Airbender movie if one following Book 2 was made? I think they are too important to cut out. (Remember: Their Heel-Face Turn is what leads to Azula going insane)

I feel like Nickelodeon (and the company that owns them) wouldn't see the Avatar as a successful franchise. Look at how they treated Lo K. I feel like the company would see it as too high risk with very little reward. Besides, I feel like if they decided to make another movie, they'd probably reboot it because that's how Hollywood is seeming to work these days.

Last I checked, which was admittedly almost a decade ago, Nickelodeon was owned by Viacom.

Part of me still wants an Avatar Wan movie but another part of me knows it will never happen. Even if it did I doubt they'd resist the urge to racelift everyone so they might as well not bother.

So, in other words... any follow-up to TLA would be "Not the Wan one"?

(It sounded funnier in my head, but I'm still posting it. tongue )

What they should do is be like DC's animation dept and release direct to dvd movies for the Avatar universe.

I was thinking the same thing a while back. With a world like Avatar, there's a ton of potential for individual standalone stories, focusing on past Avatars or regions we haven't explored.

Or animated adaptations of the comics stories since there are some Avatar fans that don't read comic books.

I have only read The Promise and The Search, and honestly, I'm not too impressed by either one. I considered getting the next one, but now I'm very iffy of the subject.

For what it's worth, I hear "The Rift" is generally considered better. I haven't read all of it myself.

Even though I felt like it was just set up for the world of Lo K, I did find the promise somewhat enjoyable. The Search on the other hand, not so much. It's probably because that story doesn't have Toph in it.

Ehhh The Rift's main conflict revolved around Toph being the biggest possible jerk to Aang for the great crime of trying to keep the memory of his dead culture alive through the Air Acolytes.

[up][up][up]It was a more low key story that had no major responsibilities to continuity like the Promise and the Search had. That helped things, I think. Keep expectations low. Also had some nice dilemma about progress and tradition plus some nice Toph subplot.

[up]That is a funny way to describe a a story about Aang being a jerk to some random people for the crime of trying to make a living.

Look, Toph is clearly not perfect in this story (she never is, that is her charm), but neither was Aang. He was totally focused on his own personal feelings about a culture that have been dead for a century and didn't put as much thought on the people who were living there now. To try to frame one of them ass being absolutely right and the other as being absolutely wrong is absurd.

From what I remember, Aang and the Air Acolytes try to make due having the festival in the factory even having the ceremonial picnic inside one of the buildings, until General Old Iron is awakened and bent on wiping out the whole valley and tries to murder everyone for Lady Whats her head.

Aang certainly had his faults and problems from trying to celebrate something he didn't fully remember the details of. But at the same time I can hardly blame him for trying so hard to keep the spirit of the festival alive by celebrating the parts he did remember.

Toph on the other hand is normally abrasive yes but The Rift has her on a brand new level. She comes along on a trip clearly important to her friend and then spends the entire festival raining on his parade for a variety of reasons that had nothing to do with him, and then even says this little gem to a Aang, the survivor of a genocide.

"You don't understand Aang, some people have to run away just to live."

Toph being a bit a spitfire is fun but the Rift definitely wasn't a high point for her character. The Rift in general had the same problems with characterization as the other comics.
