YMMV / Wasteful Days of High School Girls

Go To

  • Awesome Music: The opening soundtrack Wa! Moon! Dass! Cry! possesses an incredibly catchy chorus.
  • Epileptic Trees:
  • Fan Nickname:
    • "High School Girls are Funky 2".
    • Alternatively, there's "Nichijou 2.0", due to the uncanny resemblances between the two main trios, right down to their seating arrangements in class.
    • On 4chan, Majime is sometimes referred to as /biz/, their business/finance board, because she mainly uses her headphones to listen to business news.
    • "Interesting woman" for Baka, stemming from the short Running Gag in her Imagine Spots in the first episode, where all of her romantic interests describe her as such as a parody of the "interesting woman" clichenote  in women's romance.
  • It's Short, So It Sucks!: The biggest criticism of the anime adaptation is that it's way too short, with only a few chapters being cherry picked for animating due to the show's scrunched twelve-episode format.
  • Launcher of a Thousand Ships:
    • Ninomae/"Majime". Many of her classmates find her boyish looks and cool demeanor attractive, Lily has an obvious crush on her, Yamai sort of enjoys her company, Baka likes teasing her, and she has some level of genuine admiration for Robo, though how far the last one goes is beyond anyone's guess.
    • Lily, by virtue of her being a lesbian in a mostly-female cast. So far she's officially infatuated with Majime (and her mom), is a "kind-of-sort-of" perverted big sister figure to Loli, has light tension with Baka, and finds Yamai cute. And that's not getting into the literal lines of female classmates confessing their love to her in many of her chapters.
    • Loli is also slowly inching into this territory. We have Lily, who is shamelessly fond of her and is also her quasi-role model, then Majo, who enjoys taking her to (horror) movies, Baka who has definite tension with her, and now there's also Nora, who finds her cute like a small animal and feels warm and fuzzy when around her.
  • Memetic Mutation:
    • "YAMAMOTO!!"
    • Mike Checknote
    • "Ano Sa..."note
  • They Wasted a Perfectly Good Character: Robo has much less focus than her two friends. Since most of the action with her friend group and interaction with the rest of the cast comes from Baka's screwball antics and Ota's exasperation with them, she doesn't usually get much to do but toss out a couple quips. This is especially noticeable in what's supposed to be her Character Focus episode, which is instead told from the perspective of her male admirer and doesn't really do much to reveal anything more about her character that isn't already known. This is remedied in the live-action adaptation by giving her a specific segment, in the tone of "What If? Robo was born 100 years ago?"
  • Unpopular Popular Character: Yamai can barely be tolerated for her chuuni antics by much of the focus cast, but out of universe she's rather popular; she scored 2nd on the manga's official character poll and around 3rd on Chinese character polls while the anime ran.
  • Viewer Name Confusion: A long-running fan translation had Akane "Ota" Kikuchi's surname translated as Sakuchi for over 50 chapters, before the anime announcement in 2019 and website clarified it was read as Kikuchi. The group is forced to issue an apology as they started using the correct name.
  • Woolseyism: Baka's informal speech patterns and masculine body language are clearly intended to show how rude and uncouth she is in the original Japanese, but those quirks are lost on the non-Asian fanbase. To correct for this, an English fan translation had her drop constant Cluster F Bombs to show just how vulgar and tactless her behavior is meant to be.
