YMMV / Victory Five

Go To

  • Americans Hate Tingle: The manga is extremely divisive in the West due to the copious amounts of Fanservice, but in Japan, it received favourable reviews, particularly from those nostalgic for the original series.
  • Broken Base: Some fans love it for the renewal of Heinel as a reformed villain who helps the Voltes team, while others despise it for the excessive amounts of fanservice (i.e. many naked girls and Megumi being reduced to a Damsel in Distress who needs the male characters to save her). Heinel being alive all along is also considered fanservice, as he's a Breakout Character depicted as ridiculously cool compared to the other members of the cast. Another portion of the fandom didn't like how even though he was alive again, his body was plagued by an unknown disease after he was revived, meaning that he spends most of his existence suffering. As a result, a large portion of the fandom would rather pretend it doesn't exist.
  • Fanon Discontinuity: Here and there.
    • Good luck finding a Voltes V fan who acknowledges, or even likes, the Victory Five sequel manga. However, this could be a case of Americans Hate Tingle as in Japan, the manga was received rather positively.
    • Daimos fans on the other hand enjoy it because of Erika and Kazuya being confirmed to be married in the sequel series Godbird, as well as the two becoming a Battle Couple.
  • Just Here for Godzilla: After word got around that Heinel is alive in Victory Five, interest for it piqued.
  • Heartwarming Moments:
    • Erika and Kazuya's wedding photo. Considering all the heartbreak the two went through in Daimos, it's the least they deserve.
    • Chiri/Bellion, Jewellion's little sister, was originally sent to Magnebird as a spy, but when she comes into contact with Hyouma's courage and kindness, Kenichi's heroicness, and Kazuya and Erika's love, she begins to think differently from Jewellion.
    • Kenichi and Chiri bonding over being half-Boazanians.
    • Heinel atoning for his sins by doing good deeds as Knight Monohorn, which is as awesome as it is heartwarming. Especially after he becomes the Sixth Ranger of the Voltes team, acknowledging Kenichi, Daijirou and Hiyoshi as his siblings, and vice versa.
  • Hilarious in Hindsight: The Baam Empire and Boazania having a war 3000 years ago. In Super Robot Wars Alpha 2 and 3, the Boazanian Prince and the Baamite Prince meet and become good friends.
  • It Was His Sled: Heinel being Knight Monohorn. Come on, the Knight dresses in Godol's armour, and Godol only ever had one pilot in the original series. Also, who else has horns like that?
  • The Scrappy: Chiri/Bellion, because despite this being a sequel series to the Robot Romance Trilogy, she gets a large amount of focus even though she's a Canon Immigrant. Those who despise Victory Five's Fanservice are also put off with how she tends to receive a lot of nude scenes despite looking like a child.
  • They Wasted a Perfectly Good Plot: Kentaro and Heinel both appear in Victory Five but never meet. Keep in mind the last time they interacted, Heinel had just found out he was his father and cried for him as his last words before allowing the fire to claim him, while Kentaro's face was full of tears upon finding his long-lost son.
