  • Piteous from "Vestal Virgins" is played by Geoffrey Hughes, who would later be best known for playing Onslow in Keeping Up Appearances and Twiggy in The Royle Family.
  • Three guest roles from 1970 are played by Larry Martyn, who would later be best known for playing Mr. Mash in Are You Being Served?.
  • Soppia, Caushus, and Hidius from "The Ides of March" are played by Wendy Richard, Michael Knowles, and Nicholas Smith, who would later be best known for playing Miss Brahms in Are You Being Served? and Pauline Fowler in EastEnders; Captain Ashwood in It Ain't Half Hot, Mum and Teddy Meldrum in You Rang, M'Lord?; and Mr. Rumbold in Are You Being Served? respectively.

• Adaptation Displacement: While the series is generally regarded as being superior to its film adaptation, the latter is generally more well-known to modern audiences, thanks to it getting a more widespread home video release and being repeated a little more often on TV.
• Only the Creator Does It Right: Talbot Rothwell, who wrote the series had less involvement with each of the films (this one, Up the Chastity Belt, and Up the Front), eventually ending up not being involved at all with Up the Front. The general audience perception is that they got worse as they went on.
• Retroactive Recognition:
  • Villanus is played by Aubrey Woods, who would later be best known for playing Bill in Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory.
  • One of the Christians imprisoned with Lurcio is played by Kenneth Cranham, who would later be best known for playing Harvey Moon in Shine on Harvey Moon.
  • Nero's girl is played by Carol Hawkins, who would later be best known for playing Sharon Eversleigh in The Fenn Street Gang.
