• Ethnic Scrappy: Li Foo (with his constant use of Asian Speekee Engrish) and Corncob (a comedic Dirty Coward).
• Values Dissonance: The book was written in 1938, so a lot of its ideas about race will be exceptionally shocking to modern readers, particularly the notion that of the two shipwrecked societies, only the one consistent entirely of black people (and former slaves, at that!) descends into savagery. To say nothing of Luvia's liberal use of the N-word to describe them (as well as his cringe-worthy affectionate nickname for Li Foo, "Chinkee").
