YMMV / Tokimeki Tonight

Go To

  • Arc Fatigue: Many detractors of the anime complain that Ranze and Yoko's obsession with Shun takes up a lot of the anime's runtime and is quite unncecessary since we all know who he's going to end up with anyway.
  • Awesome Music:
    • The anime's ending "Super Love Lotion" is the most memorable song to be associated with the series (largely due to the ending animation), and as pointed out in Memetic Mutation below, it's only gotten more popular in the decades since.
    • The opening is a lovely and lively samba piece, fitting for kooky yet heartfelt comedy.
  • Germans Love David Hasselhoff:
    • Kuwaitis love Tokimeki Tonight, as it was one of the first anime to ever be shown. It's also fondly remembered in a few other Arab countries.
    • Not only that, but Italy is the only country outside Japan to get all of the 30 volumes of the manga translated, as well as the spinoff in 9 volumes.
  • Hilarious in Hindsight:
    • The anime has a lot of similarities with My Immortal (2006), from the main character being a dark-haired pale-skinned vampire who attends a school where she accumulates an Unwanted Harem and fights evil. Both series are also a Fountain of Memes, and are also criticized for the romantic subplots.
    • The name of the werewolf that Sheila rejects before getting with her vampire husband? Edward.
  • Memetic Mutation:
    • Ranze doing the jazz hands naked (except for the cape) in the ending credits has spawned numerous MMD parodies and fanart, on top of this it's also become infamous thanks to YouTube's algorithm frequently showing the ending credits.
    • Yoko being turned into a dog. It's even referenced on the series' official marriage applications.
  • Moe:
    • Rinze looks very cute with his messy blonde hair and large blue eyes.
    • Aira, Ranze and Shun's daughter, is an adorable, wide-eyed little girl.
  • They Copied It, So It Sucks!: While writers at AnimeNewsNetwork have praised the series, they also accuse it of ripping off Urusei Yatsura because it blends the supernatural genre with an Ordinary High-School Student romance.
  • Values Dissonance: Taku marrying his first cousin and having a daughter with her.
