- Franchise Original Sin: This episode portrays Skarloey with a defeatist attitude regarding the repair of the Skarloey Railway, which contradicts the Determinator aspect of his personality in the previous two seasons. As The Unlucky Tug pointed out in his "Sodor's Finest" episode dedicated to Skarloey, this marked the beginning of the Little Old Engine's infamous character derailment, until he was rerailed during the Brenner era. "The Old Bridge" is controversial for portraying Skarloey as Out of Character, but since it was shown that he suffered a traumatic experience and was reacting to it, some fans are more forgiving. However, during the HiT era, Skarloey regressed to a child for no good reason beyond HiT thinking he must be a child because he's a small narrow gauge engine, with predictably disastrous results.
