  • Alternate Aesop Interpretation:
    • Is Dorian destined to die by the hands Officer Lasky, and Nina could only use the camcorder to delay the inevitable?
    • Is the story an Allegory for modern America, where Nina's dreams of a better life for her son is repeatedly stymied by the racism that still lingers between white Americans and black Americans? Even with all of his advantages and his family's support, Dorian could only barely progress in society — and even then, the institutional obstacles would remain, waiting for any opportunity?
    • Or perhaps it is simply An Aesop that, no matter how innocent you are or what preventive steps you take, one can never truly be safe?
  • Anvilicious: Some viewers, even if they agree with the themes of the story, feel that the point about how there's still racism and oppression of blacks in America could have been a bit more subtle. It didn’t help that the original series also did an episode on anti-black racism that was far more subtle about its message than this episode.
  • Epileptic Trees: The ending: Is Dorian going to face again a death at the hands of Officer Lansky...or is it just an allegory of him (a black man) still going to face racism despite becoming successful in life?
  • Older Than They Think: The basic premise of a black man reliving an encounter with a cop and trying to change his behavior to avoid getting shot was done a few years earlier in a YouTube video called Groundhog Day For A Black Man.
  • Realism-Induced Horror: Being pulled over for a DWB,note  subject to the arbitrary whims of a police officer, having to stay polite and friendly even as your rights are violated, and still having the risk of being attacked for any reason is a fear that’s far too close to home for many minority viewers.
Nina: "Just like we always talk about. No attitude. Just be respectful."
  • They Copied It, So It Sucks!: While not received nearly as harshly as Two Distant Strangers, this episode was called out for "copying" the premise of the aforementioned YouTube video Groundhog Day For A Black Man.
  • The Woobie: Poor Nina is forced to see her son Dorian brutalized or even killed by a racist cop. And even after going through the lengths to save him the ending implies it was all for nothing.
