YMMV / The Simpsons S1 E6 "Moaning Lisa"

Go To

  • Hilarious in Hindsight: Bart's boxer defeats Homer's boxer by knocking his head clean off his body, a couple years before Mortal Kombat was even made.
  • Nightmare Fuel: Homer's sustained and horrified scream after waking up from his nightmare of being beaten (implied to death) by Bart in the boxing video game. It was even recycled in the Simpsons arcade game, heard whenever Homer was electrocuted.
  • Unintentionally Sympathetic: While Homer does come off as a bit of a Manchild for wanting to beat his own son at a video game to obsessive levels, there is a degree of sympathy in watching him kick Bart's arrogant ass, considering how much Bart was mocking him and Homer was even having nightmares as a result of this. The fact that Marge just turns off the console as he's about to win only bolsters sympathy for Homer given how distraught he is, even if his behavior is un-father like.
  • Values Dissonance: At one point, a mom yells at Homer for being a grown man in an arcade while picking up her son. While it is still taboo for adults in most places to hang out in recreational areas for children, the episode was still made when openly liking video games as an adult was more frowned upon. These days, adults are still expected not to be defined by playing games, but can more openly express admiration of them, with several arcades such as barcades appealing to adults seeking a childless environment.
  • Values Resonance: Mental illness became much better understood in the years to come. Lisa's problem is likely that she has a neurological condition, and she can't just "cheer up" even if that is what she wants. The fact that Marge tells her she doesn't have to pretend to be happy and promises to support her no matter what is exactly what Lisa needs to hear.
