• Big-Lipped Alligator Moment: Moe gives surprisingly good advice to Homer and Bart. Homer jokingly asked what happened to the real Moe; and as it turns out, Moe is actually tied up in a back room. Exactly who is the other Moe and how did the real Moe escape?
• Harsher in Hindsight: Homer and Lisa's plot deals with the way overinvestment in sports causes people to behave abnormally, with the normally-conscientious Lisa realizing that soccer has made her crazy after watching a DVD Homer gave her about sports riots. The very next episode, "The Boys of Bummer," would see the town bullying Bart into near-suicidal behavior after he misses an easy fly ball and loses Springfield's Little League championship.
• Hilarious in Hindsight: This episode's basic plot is Marge entering an MMORPG world and encountering Bart there. And then we have Do You Love Your Mom and Her Two-Hit Multi-Target Attacks?.
• Shallow Parody: The scene of Lisa and friends watching Bend It Like Beckham depicts a girl named Jesminder being forbidden from playing soccer by her Fantasy-Forbidding Father. In the actual film, not only is the main protagonist better known as Jess, but it’s her Mother who disapproves of her desire, while her father is an Open-Minded Parent who happens to be a Henpecked Husband.
• Woolseyism: The Brazillian dub has Homer shouting "Zidane!" when he headbutts the assistant referee, a reference to Zinedine Zidane's infamous headbutting incident at the 2006 FIFA World Cup Final.
