- Aluminum Christmas Trees: The scene where Homer gets charged 100 dollars after getting a haircut involving his only hair cut off is played as a gag of him being overcharged, but many hair salons do have a flat rate of how much they charge regardless of how much they cut.
- Crosses the Line Twice:Ned: Ooh, that's quite a thing-a-ma-jigsaw. But it looks like you're missing a piece!Ned: (laughing) I walked right into that one!
- Fan-Preferred Cut Content: A lot of fans has expressed that the episode likely would've been far better with the original plan to bring Karl back and expand on his relationship with Homer.
- Harsher in Hindsight: In one scene, it's mentioned that Patty and Selma put forward a bill to have Homer kicked out of Springfield (with Homer mentioning that he has until November before the voters decide). A later episode would feature a town meeting where the townspeople (Patty and Selma included) discuss the notion of, and ultimately decide to, kicking the entire family out of Springfield (with Homer's past behavior being a major factor in this decision).
- Heartwarming in Hindsight: This episode is one of the most prominent examples of how Homer's alcoholism has caused problems in his life, so it's nice to know he eventually kicks the habit.
- Just Here for Godzilla: Many fans watch this episode just to see "Weird Al" Yankovic in action.
