- Alternative Character Interpretation: Did Stevens reject Miss Kenton because he was by nature and asexual and mostly emotionless loner (i.e. a schizoid personality), or did he have normal emotional and physical desires and simply choose not to act on them because he would have seen carrying on a relationship with fellow servant staff as unprofessional and unbecoming his duties as a butler? Their final scene together does suggest that Stevens may have had feelings for Miss Kenton but chose not to pursue them, but ambiguously so.
- Award Snub: Nominated for eight Academy Awards, but won nothing.
- Ho Yay: What if there was another reason Stevens was so immune to Miss Kenton's charms, and so devoted to his master?
- Retroactive Recognition: Baby Lena Headey shows up as a maid for a few minutes.
- Values Dissonance: Elizabeth thinks that Miss Kenton is old, calculating that she's at least 30 years old. Even in the late 80s / early 90s this must have seemed odd to anyone unaware that in The '30s, any unmarried British woman aged 30 or older would have been considered an old spinster.
