YMMV / The Phynx

Go To

  • Fair for Its Day: There's some racial humor and stereotyping with Ray and Lonny, but overall they come across as likable, and most importantly are (fairly briefly) put into multiracial sexual pairings.
  • He Really Can Act: Among the band members, Dennis Larden stands out with an Adorkable quality in the vein of Bud Cort, some good comic timing, and some amusing Deadpan Snarker quips. You get the sense that he could've had a decent career as a comedic actor if he'd wanted to.
  • Padding: The film's pacing is atrocious, with scenes that should be quick setup-punchline bits dragging on for several minutes. The "find the three women with parts of the map on tattooed their stomachs" sequence runs for nearly 20 minutes, with basically the same three or four jokes and various Fanservice elements repeated over and over.
  • Retroactive Recognition: Sally Struthers makes a blink-and-you-miss-it appearance as a member of the band's Groupie Brigade.
  • They Wasted a Perfectly Good Plot: The government and the music business, as two entities built on manipulation and excess, are excellent comedic targets, and the idea of a CIA Expy forming a rock band and weaponizing them has endless possibilities. Unfortunately, the film is just a silly Shallow Parody rather than a full-throated Satire, and is mostly just trite and tedious.
  • Unintentional Period Piece: With lots of topical jokes for the end of The '60s, the whole film counts, but especially one joke related to Ronald Reagan being governor of California at the time.
