YMMV / The Oz Effect

Go To

  • Anvilicious: Action Comics #987 features a scene where Superman saves undocumented immigrants from a white supremacist gunman The scene was rather contrived and blatantly done to address racial politics, but given that it was published in the middle of extreme racial tension in the U.S., many people found the scene very satisfying indeed.
  • Captain Obvious Reveal: The identity of Mr Oz being Jor-El. Played with somewhat in that many, many other characters were speculated for his identity (most notably Ozymandias), but a combination of clues leading up to The Reveal and a cover showing Jor-El being taken by Dr Manhattan meant that there were few news sources that didn't figure out the truth.
  • Harsher in Hindsight: A madman with a gun starting a hostage situation at Daily Planet, claiming they're publishing "fake news" was already unpleasant. It became much more disturbing when a few months later a man in real-life was arrested for threatening mass shooting at CNN for airing "fake news".
  • Heartwarming Moments: Despite Jor-El's Humans Are Bastards belief, he has nothing but respect and approval of Lois being his daughter-in-law.
  • Nightmare Fuel: As shown on the main page, one lenticular cover transitions from the classic S symbol with the caption "HOPE" to an S symbol MADE OF CORPSES with the caption "OZ".
  • What Do You Mean, It's Not Political?: As Mr. Oz tries to show Superman that Humans Are Bastards it quickly becomes impossible for this story to not feature political elements. However, it carefully tries to pick up examples of bad things commonly used by both sides of the political spectrum to not be picking a side itself - the debate between Superman and Mr. Oz is about human nature as a whole, not human nature as seen by right-wing or left-wing. Still didn't stop some people from calling it propaganda of whichever side they disagree with. FOX News is probably the worst offender declaring the book to be liberal propaganda because Superman saved a group of immigrants from being shot by a madman.
