YMMV / The Newlywed Game

Go To

  • Fan Nickname: The Carnie Wilson-hosted revival was given the portmanteau "Carniewed". When Sherri Shepherd replaced Carnie, it became "Sherriwed".
  • More Popular Replacement: Original announcer Scott Beach was supposedly ousted because he would sing war protest songs to the audience during the commercial breaks. His replacement, veteran announcer Johnny Jacobs, would become the go-to announcer for Chuck Barris Productions.
  • Replacement Scrappy:
    • Paul Rodriguez, who replaced a legend 13 weeks into the 1988-89 season. While initially hosting with a very obnoxious and overbearing personality, he toned it down greatly and became a very competent host in his own right.
    • Carnie Wilson, who clearly didn't get the game's structure and was more a victim of post-production editing (many set reports stated that she was a good host and had a great personality, but neither of these ever seemed to get into the finished product). This was made only more obvious when Eubanks returned for two episodes just to prove that he's still got it.
  • They Changed It, Now It Sucks!:
    • Compared to the New Newlywed Game that had been running since 1985 and had just altered its format for the 1988-89 season to use money, the massive overhaul that took place when Paul Rodriguez became host on December 12.
    • The Gary Kroeger-hosted first season of the '90s revival had a huge amount of unnecessary format changes and a very different look and feel compared to the Bob Eubanks editions everyone knew and loved. So the show simply returned to the style of said editions — including bringing back Eubanks — the following season.
