YMMV / The Move

Go To

  • Americans Hate Tingle: The Move was beloved in the UK, notching seven Top 10 hits, but never developed much beyond a cult following in America, with "Do Ya" (which in the UK was just the B-Side of "California Man") being their only single to chart in Billboard, peaking at a mere #93. Which made Electric Light Orchestra becoming a reliable FM rock favorite in the US a genuine surprise.
  • Awesome Music: "Blackberry Way," the band's sole #1 hit in the UK. A stomping Beatlesque tune that featured future Electric Light Orchestra keyboardist Richard Tandy on bass and harpsichord.
  • Harsher in Hindsight: Mental illness was the theme of songs like "Disturbance" and "Cherry Blossom Clinic." (The Move recorded the latter song twice.) Ace Kefford, the band's original bassist, has suffered from mental illness for decades. Since leaving the band, he has been in and out of mental hospitals, made several suicide attempts, and battled drugs and alcohol.
  • More Popular Spin-Off: Electric Light Orchestra, at least in the United States.
  • Signature Song: "Flowers in the Rain" and "Blackberry Way."
  • Spiritual Successor: In addition to ELO, Cheap Trick is a contender; they've covered no less than three Move songs ("California Man", "Brontosaurus" and "Blackberry Way").
