YMMV / The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel - Northern War

Go To

  • Angst? What Angst?: Despite Rean losing control of his powers inside Valimar during the show's climax, which is an incident that looms over his conscience for most of Cold Steel III, he cheerfully has one final conversation with Lavi after waking up from his several days long coma no worse for wear. Slightly justified as it's only been a few days after he woke up before he's finally had time to think of what had happened.
  • Anti-Climax Boss: Jayna is built up as a cunning schemer and a fearsome Jaeger, but she opts to force Lavi into a Sadistic Choice rather than fight directly. She also fails to anticipate Talion's betrayal, allowing him to simply slit her throat.
  • Continuity Lock-Out: The series depicts a Great Offscreen War that happened between the seventh and eighth entries of a Long Runner known for its meticulous worldbuilding, which just so happen to be part 2 and 3 of an arc (meaning you have to have played at least two of the entries, that being the first half of the Trails of Cold Steel tetralogy, for this series to make sense), with completion times often clocking in over 100 hours. There's simply no way to cram all that worldbuilding into a small number of half-hour anime episodes while simultaneously fleshing North Ambria out. It briefly explains the Salt Pale incident and mentions that Crossbell has fallen to Erebonian rule, but other than that, it assumes you've played the Trails series up to Cold Steel II.
  • Ensemble Dark Horse: Both Ivano and Tak are popular to the fanbase and wished they would have accompanied Lavi to Erebonia instead due to their chemistry and the fact that they would react exactly how a normal person would have reacted to the things that happen in the Trails Series.
  • Fanon Discontinuity: A sizable number of Trails fans, particularly on Reddit, did not like the anime for a myriad of reasons and have openly voiced their contempt for it. As such, fans preferred that the anime's events never happened.
  • Fan Nickname:
    • Lavian gained the moniker "Juna 2.0" after the second trailer came out. This is due to said trailer showing her getting saved by Rean, causing fans to compare her circumstances with Juna's, as the latter had a similar experience.note
    • Ivano and Tak are sometimes called Biggs and Wedge by the fanbase.
  • Growing the Beard: While episodes one and two were a good introduction of the setting of North Ambria and episodes three and four focused on the cast getting to know each other, episode 5 is when the anime finally starts picking up the pace with Lavi meeting Rean and discovering that he is the empire’s hero, with the following episodes picking up from there.
  • Just Here for Godzilla: Many who have played through the Cold Steel games are excited to see Rean as an antagonist, North Ambria finally depicted onscreen, the war that was offscreened in Cold Steel III to finally be depicted onscreen and Rean inside Valimar going feral against the numerous archaisms that were deployed in the capital of North Ambria.
  • Memetic Mutation: "Plus one to the harem."note
  • Nightmare Fuel: In episode 12, we're finally shown Rean going berserk while facing off against the Archaisms in full, and it's horrifying. As he realizes he can't protect the people from the Archaisms, he suddenly freezes as the camera zooms in on his trembling, now veiny eyes before he suddenly lets out an inhuman roar as his eyes turn completely red and a hellish aura that's large enough to clear the clouds covering the city engulfs both him and Valimar.
  • They Wasted a Perfectly Good Character: Various villains from Ouroboros cameo in The Stinger of episode 7, only to make zero appearances for the rest of the anime, making one ask why they were even there to begin with aside from Fanservice.
