YMMV / The Hobbit (2003)

Go To

  • Big-Lipped Alligator Moment: The game takes the novel's most infamous BLAM and somehow makes it even weirder, as the troll's talking purse has Banjo-Kazooie-esque eyes and a visible mouth. Much like the book, no one mentions it again; unlike the book, there's not even a Space Whale Aesop from the narrator.
  • Demonic Spiders: The green spiders. Who else? Especially considering they're the descendants of Ungoliant, who is pretty close to a demon.
  • Hilarious in Hindsight:
    • You can hear some elves in the background wondering if there are any beardless dwarves. There are some (almost) in the film trilogy.
    • The game features a female Mirkwood elf, similar to Tauriel from the films. The plot of Bilbo warning someone of a goblin attack during the final battle was also used in the films.
  • Suspiciously Similar Song:
    • In the Game Boy Advance version. This is the Magic Music Box in The Elvenking's Castle. This is "Singing Mountain" from Chrono Trigger. Any questions?
    • Also in the GBA version, some have pointed out that BGM of Hobbiton sounds similar to "Waltz to the Moon" from Final Fantasy VIII.
  • Tear Jerker: The game is mostly a brightly-colored, action-adventure version of Tolkien's book. Then you get to Mirkwood, and meet Corwin, a soldier from Laketown, whose entire party was just killed by spiders, including his brother. The music alone will tear your heart out.
  • They Wasted a Perfectly Good Character: Balfor. He proves himself to be a badass when he kills all the Goblin Guards, yet unlike Corwin and Lianna, he doesn't appear in the final chapter, despite being a dwarf of the Iron Hills. Dáin never appears either and is only mentioned once in the whole game.
  • They Wasted a Perfectly Good Plot: Beorn's house and Rivendell are not shown or illustrated in the cutscenes except in the Game Boy Advance version (though there is a brief appearance of Beorn's house on the map shown on the main menu). In fact, Beorn is never shown in his human form. However, this could be justified in the case that they were not included due to being cut for time.
