YMMV / The Heist: Monaco

Go To

  • Adorkable: Anton is very awkward when trying to flirt to a barista, and his first reaction to Jones is “Now we have a Hulk!” When he is first recruited by Lee, he asks them to raise their fist and shout "Heist crew, assemble!"
  • Base-Breaking Character:
    • The entire heist crew: lovable rogues with moral value or delusional hypocrites who have no right to claim the moral high ground.
    • Lee. Some players find them sympathetic with a solid code of honor and admire them for their good charisma and leadership. They also appreciate the opportunity to play as a veteran instead of a beginner. Other players dislike them for their Holier Than Thou attitude when reacting to Ansel's betrayal while ignoring the fact that criminals are inherently dishonorable by default.
    • Samira "Blackbird" Yazdi. On one hand, she's quickly beloved by the fandom for her passionate personality, efforts to provide the best she could for her daughter, ability to look up databases in the blink of an eye, sense of justice when she took down corrupt governments and corporations, humorous dialogue with her teammates, and being the first character to wear a hijab. On the other hand, some players are put off by her Hot-Blooded personality and her being a Third-Person Person sometimes.
    • Anton Edison. Some players like him for being a Teen Genius with an Adorkable personality and funny interactions with his fellow teammates (especially his father). Other players dislike him for being a Glory Hound whose main motive to join the Heist crew is similar to Ansel's reason for betraying Lee in the first place.
    • Sybil. Some consider her a quirky character who brings comedy to the team whenever needed. On the other hand, others are put off by many of her strange quirks and consider her annoying.
  • Broken Base:
    • The ability to recruit which person you want into the crew. Some players like this feature because it allows them to recruit which member they want. Other players dislike it because the crew's interchangeability renders its members underdeveloped.
    • The story's very low focus on romance in favor of the plot, heist crew, and heist points mechanism has divided players. Some applaud this move because doing so prevents a Romantic Plot Tumor, in which one love interest takes up unnecessary amounts of screen time that it spoils the quality of the story. Others, mostly romance fans, dislike this because they think love interests are a major part of what makes a Choices story great, and lowering the focus on romance and character relationships renders the story boring no matter how good the plot is.
    • The reveal that it was Rye’s fault that the plan to steal the diamond from Carlisle failed because he gave the escape routes to Ansel, who ended up betraying them and sending Eris to prison. Some were ready to forgive him immediately because he was trying to get his mother relocated with a new identity, let alone that he had no way to know that Ansel was going to betray them. Others argue that this mistake cost Eris time in jail and he should have known better by telling his situation to the rest of the team. Its quick resolution has also divided players; some praise it for preventing unnecessary drama from taking over the story while others criticize it for mishandling Rye's character and missing an opportunity to develop him further.
  • Catharsis Factor:
    • Recruiting Lena as the muscle and watching her pummel Ansel Crane is regarded as a fitting fate for the latter because of his mistreatment of her as well as for his Smug Snake attitude.
    • The good ending for Lee, Rye, and Eris has Barrett thrown into jail for being a Corrupt Corporate Executive who exploits the sick by raising medical fees, which players find a fitting fate for a Hate Sink like him.
  • Designated Hero: As likable and funny the group is, the heist crew members are still essentially criminals plotting to steal royal jewels, and their main motive for doing so is to merely get back at Ansel for betraying them, with his cooperation with Barrett Carlisle as a mere bonus.
  • Ensemble Dark Horse:
    • Sonia is well liked for her character design, discernment between right and wrong, and gradual willingness to bond with Lee. It gets to the point that many are ecstatic that she's a love interest.
    • Eris instantly gained several fans as soon as a sneak peak featuring her character model was released. Several players who aren't romancing Eris have voiced their appreciation for her character due to being spontaneous and having a fun personality.
    • Uppercut Jones if he is chosen as a muscle over Lena. He is a hardworking Gentle Giant who dreams of running his own wrestling federation his own way, and tries to choose non-violent methods whenever possible.
    • Peter Graves if he is chosen as The Grifter. Many players have praised his charming, entertaining personality, character design and his energy when he is committed to a role. Some even wished he was a Love Interest as well.
  • Fan-Preferred Couple:
    • Many fans' heart were shattered when it was confirmed that Uppercut Jones is not a Love Interest.
    • There are players who ship Lee with Peter Graves because of the latter's character design and charming personality.
    • A number of fans ship Sonia with Lena Ortiz owing to their interactions with Ansel, with the former working for him and possibly turning against him and the latter seeking revenge against him for his horrible treatment of her.
  • Heartwarming Moments: The good endings of each crew member, with notable examples shown below.
    • Samira's good ending shows her and her husband attending their daughter's soccer match, with her daughter finally being able to afford proper equipment for her soccer team. She's also able to balance her regular life and her hacktivist persona, as shown by her brief confrontation with a Corrupt Corporate Executive during the match.
    • Jones's good ending shows him winning a match against Bobby Low-Blow and giving him a golden belt along with the children in the audience, proceeding to say that everyone is a winner.
    • Lena's good ending shows her running a security firm, hiring many of Ansel's former employees, and being a Benevolent Boss to them.
    • If you have both Niles and Anton in your crew, Niles's good ending show him personally welcoming his son into the Rooks and calling him by his preferred codename Shadowhawk despite him and the rest of the crew initially telling him they weren't going to call him that.
    • Miranda's good ending shows her rekindling her Childhood Friend Romance with Marguerite.
      • Even Miranda's bad ending has a bit of this, as Marguerite beams when Miranda slips her a note while fleeing from authorities.
  • Les Yay: Between Miranda Moreau and Marguerite. The former gets flustered every time she talks about the latter. Picking the premium option to recruit Miranda leads to more of these moments, culminating in The Big Damn Kiss in Chapter 14.
  • Magnificent Bastard: Whisper is a senior member of the Rooks and one of the greatest thieves in the world, having stolen $300 million worth of art by herself. While imprisoned at Trask Island, she meets fellow thief Eris Huang and provides her with intel on potential recruits for a heist targeting the crown jewels of Monaco. If Lee frees Whisper alongside Eris, Whisper will return the favour by infiltrating the Monacan royal wedding as Barrett Carlisle's wedding coordinator and helps the crew's pickpocket escape in a service tray. When Lee is cornered by Carlisle and four guards, Whisper incapacitates them with a smoke bomb and threatens Carlisle to never come after her or her allies again.
  • Memetic Mutation: Bobby Low-Blow, Uppercut Jones' opponent in the wrestling ring, is often mocked for having a very weird looking face.
  • Ships That Pass in the Night: Anton and Sybil to a few of the readers, since both are the younger members and Cloud Cuckoo Lander Sybil tends to weird out Adorkable Anton with her antics.
  • They Wasted a Perfectly Good Plot: Largely irrelevant as there isn't going to be a sequel, but Sonia joining Interpol as The Mole for Lee's gang if they have a good relationship would have been more interesting than her simply declining.
