• Base-Breaking Character:
  • From Boys & Girls in the City:
    • Natsumi Saito is quite possibly the most divisive member of the house, with many disliking her blunt personality and her tendency to feign ignorance when she was called out on her behavior.
    • Yuki "Tap" Adachi is not very well-liked due to his status as the "Dream Police" and making both Mizuki and Yuriko cry in the third episode. He received a lot of backlash on Twitter and apparently decided to mellow out a little afterwards.
  • From Aloha State:
    • Lauren Tsai. Opinions on her are wildly varied, to say the least. Promotional material for the new season focused a lot on her and the panel commentators stated that she was one of the prettiest female members that have been on the show. However as the season went on, interest in her waned due to her somewhat introverted personality and perceived lack of social experience. Even the panel grew less interested in her as time went on.
• Ensemble Dark Horse:
  • Mizuki Shida, one of the original members from Boys & Girls in the City is possibly the most well-liked female member of the house, particularly with international viewers, due to her sweet personality and good looks, as well as her calling out of Makoto's behavior. Many feel like her time on the show was too short.
  • Arman Bitaraf. International viewers love him for his laid-back, friendly, and straightforward personality.
• Germans Love David Hasselhoff: Arman is incredibly popular with international viewers, but Japanese viewers seem less interested in him, particularly the panel who saw him as a lazy bum and criticized his lack of facial expressions.
• Harsher in Hindsight/Overshadowed by Controversy: The 2019-2020 season showed an incident where Hana Kimura got into a verbal conflict with housemate Kai Edward Kobayashi after he ruined her Wrestle Kingdom 14 attire in the washer, and his indifference afterwards. The conflict reached its apex when Kimura pulled Kobayashi's hat off his head in frustration at what she felt to be his dismissive attitude. When the episode aired, Kimura attracted various negative comments from social media which escalated into full-blown cyberbullying, sending her into a deep depression which would eventually lead to her suicide on May 23, 2020, as well as the cancellation of 2019-2020.
• The Scrappy:
  • Hayato Terashima is pretty universally disliked by viewers for his creepy behavior and for outright lying to the other members and constructing a persona for the show.
  • Yuudai is unpopular with viewers, in addition to not getting on well with the other housemates and being roundly criticized by the panel. People disliked him for his childish behaviour, especially in his interactions with Ami, the minimal amount of effort he makes to pursue his stated goal becoming a chef, and for taking it badly when other housemates call him on this.
  • Cheri from Aloha State might be the most universally disliked member across all seasons due to her belligerent behavior against many of her housemates. Outside of the show, she has drawn controversy for her claims, including her belief that the COVID-19 pandemic is a hoax. Most of the members from Aloha State stayed friends after the season ended and have posted hangouts and reunions regularly on social media, but Cheri has never been present at any of these. Suffice to say, it seemed as though her fellow housemates do not seem to care for her, either.
• They Changed It, Now It Sucks!: Aloha State has been seen as a step down in many ways, as many international viewers enjoyed the novelty of seeing various locations in Japan. Many of the housemates were seen as either too young and lacking in social experience to bond as much with their fellow housemates or perceived as simply using the show to promote their personal projects (like Eric).
• Values Dissonance: Tap's complete dismissal of Mizuki's dreams earned him a lot of ire. His intense personality can be attributed to the fact that he's been practicing and working on tap dancing since he was seven years old and perceives people that aren't working as hard on their dreams as wasting their lives.
  • Shohei's pursuit of Seina in Opening New Doors, one of the most notable instances of this happening across all series. While waiting for a taxi on the way back home from a date, Shohei awkwardly grabs Seina's face and kisses her, which she seems quite shocked by. Later in the house, Seina is visibly uncomfortable and distraught, her body turned away from the rest of her housemates. As Shohei discusses what happened in the men's bedroom, the other two male housemates state that Seina looked quite "womanly" and seemed quite pleased with the kiss. International viewers were incredibly disturbed by Shohei's behavior, leading to a lot of discussion about views on consent in Japan. Shohei's interest in her fizzles out eventually, as Seina tells him that she is not interested romantically or sexually.
