  • Alternate Character Interpretation: In Heihachi's non-canon ending, Kazuya is shocked to see Jin chained up, even stepping forward to get a closer look. Simply surprise at Heihachi having managed to capture Jin? Or perhaps a display of latent paternal instinct? The former is more likely given Kazuya's lack of concern for Jin throughout the rest of the series, but the latter isn't entirely out of the realm of possibility when you consider Kazuya's own non-canon ending in 2, where Heihachi ends up Taking the Bullet for him against Devil despite their series-wide enmity.
  • Contested Sequel: Tekken 4 is often seen as the weakest entry in the series due to its irregular stage layouts as opposed to the flat arenas found in earlier games. However, it has fans who think highly of it due to its soundtrack and dark, serious atmosphere, the latter of which is something that would be lost to a degree in later installments.
  • They Changed It, Now It Sucks!: Jin was changed from an archetypal Mishima with some of Jun's moves to a character with an entirely different fighting style altogether, which didn't go over well with many fans. Perhaps in response to this, Tekken 5 introduced Devil Jin as a playable character and gave him Jin's old moveset from 3 and Tag.
  • Vindicated by History: Though still considered the Oddball in the Series, Tekken 4 is nowhere near as hated as it was at launch, with some commending Namco for taking the Darker and Edgier approach that gives even the more comical characters Hidden Depths, combined with the unique atmosphere and mechanics that makes 4 more of a victim of its own over-ambition than anything else. The fact that some fans are tired of seeing the non-Mishimas be Put on a Bus or Out of Focus (especially by Tekken 7) also adds to the growing redemption of this game.
  • WTH, Costuming Department?: You'd be hard pressed to not see Heihachi's P1 costume as an old man wearing an oversized adult diaper and not a traditionally masculine Japanese warrior wearing a fundoshi.
