YMMV / Tales of the Hunger Games

Go To

  • Alternative Character Interpretation: Eugenia stated that Vesma is more "calmer" than her predecessors. Is she referring to Nina and Dina Dalton specifically, or all of the District Two female tributes in general?
  • Broken Base: Although fans are ecstatic to see the Games continue after the 75th Hunger Games, there is a sharp divide between those who hate that Katniss, Johanna, and Peeta die during the Reclamation Games and those who agree that there is no feasible way the Capitol would let those Rebel Victors (especially Katniss) survive again.
  • Catharsis Factor:
    • Ennius Dalton kills Katniss and Johanna, taunts Rue Mellark about it, takes pleasure in the violent deaths of the Hunger Games, torments countless tributes physically and psychologically, and is an all-around jerk. Selena killing him is one of the most satisfying moments in the series.
    • Many in the real-world audience soon lost patience and sympathy for Panatena of the 87th Games to the point where they cheered when she died. This reaction got an in-universe reference when Winnow and Drinn, two tributes of the District 9 Games, watched Sheaf's Games and encouraged him to kill her.
    • Janus (96th Hunger Games) is seen to be a sadist who loves torturing tributes and having them turn on each other for his own satisfaction. Many fans found it satisfying when Atomica, one of his former prisoners, tortured him through electrocution at the end, making him beg for a mercy kill.
    • Given her sadistic tendencies, no one was rooting for Octavia Dalton to win the Grand Final, especially after she kills Begonia and her unborn daughter. Octavia's long Humiliation Conga involving Dazzle slicing her tendons and Tibo torturing her before dropping her into the boiling spring was considered very much deserved as a result.
  • Ensemble Dark Horse:
    • Sheaf Javorsky, Victor of the 87th Games. An underdog whose mentor completely ignores him in favor of Panatena, he proves to be an out of universe dark horse in the Games who kills multiple dangerous opponents along with his entitled and arrogant district partner. He also becomes a part of the next rebellion and frees the avoxes years after his victory.
    • Selena Brax, Victor of the 99th Games, is touted as one of the best post-Reclamation Victors for one simple reason: she killed Ennius Dalton.
    • Flint Harrison, Victor of the 72nd Games, has enjoyed a significant amount of popularity due to being one of the few truly sympathetic Career Victors. It helps that fans were invested in her well after her games due to her in-story disappearance.
  • Fan Nickname:
    • After Christian tweeted a picture of a shirtless President Gaul (later revealed to be part of a data breach caused by UNIDAD), it's not uncommon to see some fans refer to him as "Daddy Gaul".
    • Oregon Luther is also known as "Oregano" on both the Christian Blanco subreddit and on the TOTHG Discord.
  • Fanon Discontinuity: There is a subset of fans who pretend that Katniss, Johanna, and Peeta's deaths during the Reclamation Games never happened.
  • Nightmare Fuel: The standard reapings for the District Two preliminaries of the 100th Hunger Games. Can you imagine your mayor announcing one after being constantly reassured while growing up that you're safe from the arena?
  • Tear Jerker: See Here
  • Spoiled by the Format:
    • In the pre-Reclamation episodes, Christian tells the audience who the Victor is and how old they are at the time. If it's an O.C. Stand-in of a canon character, he'd also include an official picture of them note .
    • If one POV character is still alive in the post-Reclamation episodes, it is inevitable that they will become the Victor no matter how many other tributes are left. The two exceptions so far are Dougal (89th Games, killed by Alisia Heath during the final confrontation) and Electress (District 3 preliminaries for the 100th Hunger Games, dies from the bullets sprayed by Lumo after he escapes the arena).
  • Unpopular Popular Character:
    • Sheaf is hated by the Capitol for killing Panatena but he is loved by much of the audience for that and his unloved underdog status. He became even more popular when it was revealed he's part of the latest rebellion and helped free the avoxes.
    • Atomica is despised by the Capitol for not only surviving a gas attack that should have killed her off, but also torturing and killing Capitol-favourite Janus. The real-world audience loves her for surviving against the odds and getting revenge on the sadistic career that tortured her and several other tributes.
