YMMV / Star Trek S1 E7 "What Are Little Girls Made Of?"

Go To

  • Accidental Innuendo: Among all the Styrofoam Rocks, Kirk infamously “just happens” to grab one that looks exactly like a Styrofoam penis.
  • Harsher in Hindsight:
    • One of the vaunted benefits of roboticizing humanity is a lack of starvation. Then, in "The Conscience of the King", we find out that the teenage Kirk survived a mass execution that occurred to prevent starvation.
    • Spock clearly draws back into his Vulcan shell after the robot Kirk calls him an interfering half-breed. The moment comes off as harsh as it stands. However, it gets worse after episodes like "Amok Time" and "Journey to Babel" and even the 2009 reboot film relate that racial discrimination has been a recurring problem for most of Spock's life. And then even worse after the Star Trek: Discovery episode "If Memory Serves" reveals just how close to home that insult hits for Spock.
    • During one part of the episode, Andrea kisses and then slaps the restrained Kirk. Much later, the series would introduce Janice Lester, one of Kirk's ex-girlfriends who was and is quite abusive to him after stealing his body.
  • Hilarious in Hindsight: Christine asks Spock if he's ever been engaged, which produces a brief expression of bafflement. Come "Amok Time", it's revealed that yes, he is engaged.
  • Theiss Titillation Theory: One of Theiss's best-known creations. Andrea has a costume with an upper portion that's merely two crossed strips of material. Off the set, models wearing this costume never failed to get a dramatically appreciative reception from at least the men.
    • In William Shatner's Get A Life, he tells a story about how Gene Roddenberry talked that same outfit into a fashion show at a Sci-Fi con. According to one of the people there, the model apparently had to spend the evening "beating men off with a stick". Notable is the fact that the series hadn't even aired yet.
    • According to Herb Solow and Robert Justman's book on Star Trek, William Shatner couldn't stop hitting on Sherry Jackson once he saw her in the outfit. Further, the first public modeled display of the costume was in Desilu Studios' lunch room, where Ms. Jackson entered in said outfit — according to Herb, forks stopped midway to people's mouths.
  • Les Yay: Overjoyed that her fiancée is alive, Chapel exchanges a kiss with Uhura.
