* ThatOneSidequest: The RomanceSidequest with Amy is fairly difficult to get even if you're ''trying'' to be nice to her, as rather than a set of flags or choosing enough nice responses, you essentially have to ask her every possible DialogueTree question at every point while agreeing with her every time the party has a difference of opinion in the story. (And her advice isn't always the most logical) The actual RelationshipUpgrade event doesn't occur until near the final battle, so you won't know if you've unlocked it for a long time. It's very likely a player won't know it exists unless they read about it online.

* OvershadowedByControversy: Nowadays, the game is much more well-known for being at the center of the Creator/{{Sega}} x Creator/KenPenders legal dispute than anything else.

* ItsHardSoItSucks: One of the criticisms the game received is how much it seemingly hates the player. The characters can have a hard time just ''hitting'' the enemies due to the high evasion of even the most basic encounters, said enemies can also hit like a truck even early on, and some of the ActionCommands can get [[SomeDexterityRequired really complicated fast]]. There's a reason Cream is considered the best character in the game, simply because her healing can be ''required'' for some battles.

The "Knuckles tribe" name has been official since Sonic Adventure 2, just obscure.

* {{Fanon}}: An unusual case. Despite the game entering CanonDiscontinuity due to the legal troubles surrounding it, much of its {{Worldbuilding}} remains accepted in the fandom by default, since no official work yet exists to contradict it. Numerous people still refer to Knuckles' ancestors as the Knuckles Clan[[note]]Even official games, too--Tikal is described as a member of the Knuckles clan in ''VideoGame/SonicRunners''[[/note]], for example, despite that conceit being introduced in this game.

* SerialNumbersFiledOff: While many concepts and characters were lifted from TV and comic adaptations, the Nocturnus and Shade were too close to their inspiration from ''Comicbook/SonicTheHedgehogArchieComics'' for Creator/KenPenders' liking, which precipitated quite a bit of litigation.

Crosswicking.

* CondemnedByHistory: The game always had its critics, but at the time of its release, the game was seen as a bright spot in the franchise's AudienceAlienatingEra, and most of the game's faults were seen as something that could be fixed in a sequel, especially since the game ended on a cliffhanger. However, due to many issues, such as the game selling poorly, and legal issues that would've prevented a sequel, the game was forced to stand on its own. With no promises of a sequel, people looked at the game with a much more critical eye, and nowadays, many fans consider it one of the weaker spinoffs of the series. Even those with positive views of the game are more than willing to point out its shortcomings.

* CondemnedByHistory: The game always had received decent reviews when it was released, praising its critics, but at the time story, characters, and vast amounts of its release, the game gameplay options. Its DialogueTree was also highlighted in positive reviews, seen as a way to give Sonic more depth and increase replayability. Many called it a bright spot in the franchise's AudienceAlienatingEra, AudienceAlienatingEra Sonic was suffering during the late 2000s, the flaws in gameplay and most story getting reported in reviews being dismissed as things to be fixed with a sequel, which the [[SequelHook game's ending]] clearly showed was on the cards. However, said sequel never materialized due to a combination of lukewarm sales, its developer Creator/{{Bioware}} getting bought out by Creator/ElectronicArts, and an attempted lawsuit by Creator/KenPenders, where he accused some of the characters as being copied from his. With ''Chronicles'' now doomed to be a StillbornFranchise, what were once seen as minor complaints in the gameplay and presentation became much bigger issues with players now deriding its gameplay as [[LowTierLetdown severely]] [[GameBreaker unbalanced]] with combat that focuses too much on [[{{Waggle}} touch screen gimmicks]], requiring perfect or near perfect completion at all times to even accomplish anything. While the game's faults soundtrack and graphics were once seen as something that could be fixed in a sequel, especially passable, they're both now seen [[SoBadItsGood as laughably bad at best]]. The DialogueTree has since been seen as unfitting for Sonic, with most of the game ended on a cliffhanger. However, due choices doing nothing to many issues, such as affect the game selling poorly, and legal issues that would've prevented overall narrative aside from a sequel, RomanceSidequest with Amy. The vast majority of choices are limited to giving Sonic the game was forced option to stand on its own. With no promises [[TookALevelInJerkass be more of a sequel, people looked at jerk]], which would be a common criticism of the game with character starting in the 2010s. The fact its lack of follow-up turned the SequelHook into a much more critical eye, gigantic SuddenDownerEnding [[AudienceAlienatingEnding overshadowed any of the story's merits for many]]. Combine all these factors and nowadays, many fans consider it ''Chronicles'' is now seen as one of the weaker spinoffs of worst spin-off games in the series. Even those with positive views of the game are more than willing to point out its shortcomings.franchise.

Sonic rush series has been split

* SpecialEffectsFailure: The 3D gameplay models for the characters look ''very'' cluttered and uncanny (especially compared to what the ''VideoGame/SonicRushSeries'' had to offer), with their lack of detail and disproportionately-sized eyes, and the other visuals alongside them don't look too good, either. The 2D in-game artwork is relatively better, but the animated cutscenes especially tend to look OffModel relatively frequently.

* MagnificentBastard: [[Characters/SonicTheHedgehogDrIvoEggmanRobotnik Dr. Ivo "Eggman" Robotnik]] survives his presumed death before the game proper by planting a robot to nurse him back to health in case things go wrong. In the events of the game, Eggman introduces himself to Team Sonic after being tracked down, presenting himself as reformed, while emphasizing that the two should team up anyway, as they have a [[EnemyMine common enemy]] in the enigmatic Marauder clan. Having built Metropolis, Eggman uses his knowledge of the city to hunt down the Marauders, even after an avalanche and a plane crash force him to use back-up plans. He also gains Tails' friendship by collaborating with him to refit the Tornado for overseas, and later, extradimensional travel, as well as a device to banish the Marauders to their home dimension. With the team ready to chase down the Marauders, Eggman stays behind, under the guise of ensuring a safe landing, only to instead build the Eggman Empire while his archenemy is away. CrazyPrepared and highly resilient, Eggman bounces from the brink of death to accomplish his dream of domination.

** Executing POW moves and defending against attacks requires completing ''VideoGame/EliteBeatAgents''-style commands with the touch screen. Depending on the move, the prompts range from manageable to extremely tricky, and for some, messing up even a little bit causes the move to whiff and waste HP. Likewise, many enemies can easily wipe out a party member if the defense prompt is failed. They're especially bad for players without a good stylus or touch screen.
