YMMV / Sonic and Tails R

Go To

  • Awesome Moments: Several, but Tails going Super along with Sonic takes the cake. Discounting the "Super Shield" he had at the climax of Sonic Heroesnote , this marks the first-ever Modern depiction of Super Tails in any media, and only the third one overall after the two times Tails' Classic self has gone Super.
  • Awesome Music: The series' main theme, "Fly With Me".
  • Big-Lipped Alligator Moment: Big the Cat's appearance aboard the Egg Carrier 3 comes off as this. Even Sonic and Tails quickly give up on trying to work out how and why he got there. Unlike the other cameos throughout the series, Big's contributes nothing to the episode's plotnote , and the fact it occurs in the series' darkest episode to date only makes it that much more jarring.
  • Character Rerailment:
    • After many of Shadow's more recent interpretations of his character being more heavily on the Jerkass Rival side, this series tones down these antagonistic traits and brings his more heroic qualities to light. He's also a lot more playful and respectful in the banter that he engages in with Sonic.
    • In his Day in the Limelight episode, Tails hews a lot closer to his portrayal in the Adventure games, where he relied on Sonic yet was more than capable of standing up to Eggman on his own if necessary.
  • He Really Can Act:
    • Despite not having performed the character in years, Ryan Drummond has been praised a lot by fans for his performance for Sonic in the play, with many considering it to be one of his best performances as the hedgehog to date, due to the higher level of emotional range he shows compared to the games.
    • Jason Griffith has become warmly regarded after his performances as Sonic in Unleashed and the Storybook games, but his return as Shadow in the sixth episode demonstrated that it wasn't just nostalgia that fans held for him.
  • Hilarious in Hindsight: Sonic and Tails' baffled reaction to finding Big fishing aboard the Egg Carrier 3, and Big's nonchalance about the whole thing, is remarkably similar to Sonic and Big's first meeting in Cyberspace in Sonic Frontiers.
  • Just Here for Godzilla: Most listeners probably wouldn't even have heard about the series, let alone decided to listen to it, if not for the much-hyped return of Ryan Drummond as Sonic.
    • In addition, many fans of the 4Kids cast decided to tune in because of Lisa Ortiz, Jason Griffith, and Pete Capella reprising their respective roles as Amy, Shadow, and Silver.
  • Overshadowed by Controversy: In February 2023, Mike Pollock (in the process of announcing that he would no longer do unpaid gigs) revealed that he hadn't been paid to appear in the series, and that he had gone in expecting to only record a cameo, leading to a storm of accusations that he had been taken advantage of. It eventually emerged that the creators liaised with SEGA and were told that they couldn't pay Pollock as it would violate his contract, Pollock himself had never expected to be paid for the same reason, none of the other voice actors had been paid either (and were fine with that), and Pollock had been told up front how much work would be required of him but, since there was no written contract, he had simply forgotten. By the time all this emerged, however, Doryan Nelson had already been harassed into leaving Twitter and Emi Jones had taken an extended break for the same reasons.
  • Pandering to the Base: The series' numerous continuity nods and recycling of memetic lines from the game have become more and more frequent over time, as though the creators have noticed the reception they're getting and deliberately started cranking it up. Noticeably downplayed from Episode 8 onwards, however, once the series' tone became more serious.
  • Padding: Silver's appearance in episode 4 is ultimately pointless to the narrative, serving as a glorified cameo. The series doesn't explain what is he doing in the present timeline, compared to his other appearances in the series that are involved with catastrophes happening in the future. He's just there so Pete Capella can reprise his role as Silver, and for Ryan's Sonic to say his name out loud for the first time.
  • Unexpected Character:
    • Episode 5 features Tikal, a character who hasn't made a canon appearance in the series since their introduction. They return in Episode 8, though this time their appearance was advertised in advance.
    • Even with all the series' cameos thus far, it's doubtful that many were expecting Big the Cat to show up. Even Sonic and Tails are surprised (and confused) to see him. His return in Episode 10 was equally unexpected.
    • It's not unusual for Super Sonic to appear at a series' climax, as he does in Episode 9. But who expected Super Tails to show up?!
