YMMV / Siren: The Drowning

Go To

  • Anvilicious: The writer apparently was very concerned with avoiding this trope, probably because of how it was one of the main criticisms in one of the previous World of Darkness games with an ecology theme. In particular, it was made both a part of the Flensers and further kicked in with a entire sidebar to clarify that no, they aren't all Captain Planet villains who pollute for the heck of it, and their gene mods and cybernetics aren't meant to suggest New Technology Is Evil or Cybernetics Eat Your Soul, and a good chunk of their characterization is some good people doing morally wrong things for humanity's sake or their own ambitions taking precedence.
  • Heartwarming Moments: In a way, the factor that almost all of the Siren's stereotypes on mortals are some form of praise or love towards them. Yes, they're all Yanderes for humans and unable to escape that fact, but the fact that they have such good views on them can be taken this way, especially as it is a motivating factor to stop the Deluge.
  • Spiritual Successor: This game shares many similarities with Werewolf: The Apocalypse, such as a Green Aesop and the main characters being supernaturals trying to prevent The End of the World as We Know It. Though admittedly, the writer tried to avoid most of Werewolf's pitfalls, notably the New Technology Is Evil take.
  • That One Disadvantage: Sirens are great at swimming and can be terrifying and badass in Diluvian form, but fins and tail fins aren’t going to do them any favors on land. They also have a hard time breathing out of the water when in this form unless they spend Pneuma to allow themselves to breathe. This can be mitigated or averted depending on what Alterations a Siren has. In particular, there’s three tailfin Alterations (Freshwater, Gardenia and Tropicana) that allow better movement on land and one Freshwater Alteration that aids in breathing on land.
  • Woobie Species: Sirens may have some benefits, but it all comes with the price of surviving a Despair Event Horizon and knowing the end of the world is on the horizon, and telling people about it will either have them think you're insane or they simply don't want to listen because it's easier to deny it'll happen than doing something against it. You're easily inclined to fall in extreme obsession with anyone you have to interact with for an hour or so, most of the Abyssal Currents are based around being too obsessed with one thing above anything else (which Sirens are ridiculously easy to fall for taking their Yandere nature into account), and even moreso is the factor that their flesh is an Immortality Inducer that the Flensers are always willing to sink their teeth into. As a final note, even using their powers can drag them into their Diluvian Form, which doesn't sound too bad...save that they're most likely on land when they're forced to change and the Diluvian Form can't breathe air or move very well on land at all, and that they don't have anything hiding their existence from mortals, meaning that they can easily be killed by anyone.
    • Breathless can also count. They're essentially Sirens who failed to survive their Despair Event Horizon, getting a huge hole torn into their soul. That hole makes the people around them want to tend to them and treat them with love and kindness that they would never give otherwise. At first, this sounds swell. But after a few years of unyielding and knowingly false affection, most Breathless grow jaded over it because they cannot talk to anyone else like a human being and nobody's able to act how they truly feel about the Breathless.
