Spoilers for the first arc will be unmarked!

  • Complete Monster: Lucifer here, unlike usual portrayals in the franchise, is devoid of any positive qualities. Having conquered most of the Expanse in the past, Lucifer sent his minions to cause havoc into the human world. After his first defeat, Lucifer injected demon DNA into the protagonists Setsuna Kai and Mirai Kaname, turning them into the Devil Children. At some point, Lucifer also had Fenrir exterminate Cool's clan. In the present day, Lucifer seeks to conquer the rest of the Expanse, and attempts to do this by painfully brainwashing benevolent demons into evil demons that bring chaos across the Expanse—which brings negative consequences to the human world as well. After reaching his full power, Lucifer spreads his evil influence across the entire Expanse, which causes tremendous cataclysms in the human world, before attempting to burn the remaining good demons alive after Aziz and Belial are defeated. When finally facing the Devil Children, Lucifer offers them to join him, only to horribly electrocute Setsuna when the latter defies him.
  • Ensemble Dark Horse: Queen Frost. While being a member of the already-popular Jack Frost family helps, she's also well-liked for her regal and elegant attitude that switches to a more tomboyish persona during emergencies and her unique design. She's popular enough to have gotten her own card in the Devil Children Trading Card Game, and appears pretty often in fangames. It's to the point where she's requested to appear in an actual Shin Megami Tensei game, and it also helps that other Jack Frost variants from the Devil Children series (like Frost Ace, Lucifroz, and especially the Devil Children version of King Frost) made appearances in other Shin Megami Tensei games.
  • Just Here for Godzilla: This anime is sought out by SMT fans almost entirely because the lovable Series Mascot Jack Frost is a main character and gets into various adorable antics that are the source for many reaction gifs in the fandom. Thus quite a few fans who otherwise don't care for Devil Children at least want to see where these Jack Frost gifs come from.
  • Memetic Mutation: As Jack Frost sports a wide variety of emotes as opposed to being stuck with his signature open smile, his facial expressions and antics have been a source for numerous reaction gifs. In the non-Japanese MegaTen fandom, the popularity of these Jack Frost gifs arguably exceed the popularity and knowledge of the anime adaptation itself.
  • What Do You Mean, It's for Kids?: Don't forget that this is still part of Shin Megami Tensei (you know, the same franchise that heavily relies on demonic themes and shows uncensored genitalia from a few demons), and while this anime is much Lighter and Softer than your average SMT work, it still relies pretty heavily on demonic themes (with upside-down pentagrams being continuously shown in literally every single episode).
