YMMV / Rick And Morty S 5 E 7 Gotron Jerrysis Rickvangelion

Go To

  • Designated Villain: The GoTron pilots. We have seen the Smith-Sanchez family killing other pilots in several different realities, and Rick is using the GoTrons purely for his amusement rather than to help, depriving many realities of the mechas just to have his own vanity project and even taking over one of the planets he saved for himself, all while also abandoning his family. They are not wrong in wanting him dead. It doesn't help that the other Smith-Sanchez aren't able to actually give a reason to save Rick besides "he's family".
  • Ensemble Dark Horse: Of the five real GoTron pilots, Kendra is the most popular thanks to being the most prominent among them and for actually being rather attractive between her design and Animesque style (she's more cute than sexy, but she still has her fans). Helps that she was the only one of the original pilots to be named.
  • Shallow Parody: While the show does at least reference actual aspects of Voltron, the GoTron pilots feel more like a parody-of-a-parody-of-a-parody filtered through several layers of Animesque shows than the actual anime they're supposed to reference; to the extent that anime ever looked or sounded like that, it hasn't really been a thing for decades. Kendra's habit of adding in random sounds and words as punctuation certainly paints a picture of the joke being based on a misremembered anime dub from several decades ago. (Then again, Voltron IS an anime dub from several decades ago, so...)
  • Why Would Anyone Take Him Back?:
    • Summer knows that Grandpa Rick is a toxic human being, and even though she was annoyed that they invited her to Boob World to take advantage of a damage control promotion, she decides to enable his GoTron obsession, demoting Morty out of spite when he keeps warning her that this will end with Rick screwing them all over. Morty takes being fired well, after understandably throwing a tantrum that he was nearly kidnapped and killed for refusing to betray Rick, and the family yelled at him when he tried to explain. Rather than punish Summer when the inevitable happens and make her pay for costing him a Boob World trip he's been planning for years, he watches as his parents go from wanting to murder her to comforting her.
    • Morty would have had every right to "borrow" Rick's portal gun and hop to another dimension after his family all gets Drunk with Power and yell at him for being "distracted" from security duty. Instead, he goes home with the severance pay and merely gives a mild I Told You So to his parents, who don't even have the courtesy to apologize to him and say that he was right this wouldn't go well.
