YMMV / Red Dwarf Season II "Parallel Universe"

Go To

  • Aluminum Christmas Trees: When Rimmer asks what the fifth dimension is, Lister replies, "Didn't they get to #6 with 'Baby I Want Your Love Thing'?" implying that's the name of a band in this setting. There actually is a band named The 5th Dimension, but they don't have a song named that.
  • Big-Lipped Alligator Moment: Tongue Tied. It's a music video that serves as the cold opening to the episode. No context or anything, just that. It's revealed afterwards that it's a recording of one of the Cat's dreams. One should note that the description of the video isn't even accurate, the scene has nothing to do with "parallel worlds". Apparently, not even The BBC knew what was going on with this!
  • Hilarious in Hindsight: "Tongue Tied" and Cat's disco-dancing became this in 2018 when Danny John-Jules took part in Strictly Come Dancing.
  • Just Here for Godzilla: Among fans, this is widely known as the episode that features "Tongue Tied" ... and has some other stuff about Lister getting pregnant in a Mirror Universe, which is generally only remembered for its role in indirectly setting up the Retool for the following season.
  • Older Than They Think: Good luck finding any fans who remember that Hattie Hayridge's first actual appearance in the series (albeit playing Hilly rather than Holly) was in this episode, rather than "Backwards", due to "Tongue Tied" so completely overshadowing the actual storyline of the episode for many.
  • Unintentional Period Piece: The characters briefly talk about "masculinists", which gender-swap stereotypes associated with second-wave feminism, rather than third-wave feminism common today.
  • Values Dissonance: Rimmer's female equivalent acts in a way that would be considered pervy for the time (if done by a man), but downright horrible by today's standards. She comes onto male-Rimmer, grabs him by the thigh, claims he's "begging for it", and, when he turns her down, calls him "frigid". When the Rimmers discover the Listers in bed together, she slut-shames male-Lister right to his face. This could be considered a case of Deliberate Values Dissonance, as much of the point is to showcase to Rimmer how his attitude towards women is appalling, a point that is lost on him.
