YMMV / Ray Donovan

Go To

  • Award Snub: For his role as the titular character, Liev Schreiber has been nominated for leading actor, but hasn't walked away with any awards.
  • Alternative Character Interpretation: In "SUCK", Frank kills the Innocent Bystander obviously on a Leave No Witnesses mentality. Or just kills them because Tiny's dead body fell on him and it was crushing his legs and probably his whole body.
  • Crossing the Line Twice: Given the addressee, the joke Mickey tells at Conor’s birthday party will make you feel very guilty for laughing.
Mickey: What’s the difference between acne and a priest? Acne waits till the boy is 14 to come on his face.
  • Diagnosed by the Audience: Van Miller seems to have OCD or some variation of thereof considering his odd mannerisms, cleanliness obsession and tendency to arrange everything in perfect order, but the show never confirms or denies this.
  • Funny Moments: Mick’s observation about masturbation in ‘Handshake Deal’.
  • He Really Can Act: While Jon Voight is an Oscar-winning actor, he's been getting supporting and generic roles for the past decade, but as Mickey Donovan he showed critics and audiences that he can still knock it out of the park with flying colors.
  • Harsher in Hindsight: The transgender girl blackmailing Tommy Wheeler feels eerily similar to a case that took place in Israel. No details were given, other than that a trans woman blackmailed a local famous singer for several thousand shekels with a picture of them together, but backed down after a few conversations between them.
  • Heartwarming Moments: Ray goofily dancing with his son to Aerosmith at the end of "Walk This Way".
  • Retroactive Recognition: Hasmig's song in "One Night in Yerevan" (S3 EP10) is actually "PreGomesh" by Sirusho.
  • Squick: Ray’s new client, a man who wrote self-help books and gives pep talks about ‘radical honesty’, tells him he once masturbated to the image of his own mother breastfeeding his baby sister when he was twelve years old to encourage Ray to talk more openly about his secrets.
  • Strawman Has a Point: Although his actions in trying to prevent Cookie from obtaining the rights to Marvin's music resulted in the deaths of both Recon and Marvin, Lee Drexler did have a point by saying to Cookie he made an oral agreement with Re-kon five years ago, not a contract.
